I love Argento and Romero so this has been in my watch list for a while now.  I knew it was two mini films based on Poe and I knew it wasn’t highly regarded, nonetheless I really enjoyed it.

Romero’s episode featuring Adrian Barbeau was a nasty little extension of the Creepshow, horror comics ethos with a cheating trophy wife conspiring against her dying husband until her and her lover (the husband’s doctor) meet their just desserts.  I haven’t read the Poe story on which it’s based, but it was a creepy nightmare and well executed.   Something about being dead, but aware and trapped in a corpse with no ability to escape is truly terrifying.

The second story, another adaptation of The Black Cat, completing the Fulci, Martino and Argento trio of adaptations, is quite good.  Not as good as Martino’s effort, but a bit better than Fulci’s attempt.  In this one, Harvey Keitel is an alcoholic crime scene photographer plagued by a rogue black cat and paranoid delusions who quickly descends into murder and cover ups.  There is a bonkers dream sequence in the middle of the movie and the ending set piece is great.  The rotting corpses behind the wall are truly memorable.

All in all, this is definitely worth a watch.
