I remember renting this back when it came out and being completely gobsmacked by the Italian bonkersness and dream logic. I hadn’t seen the original (watched this one first for some reason) so had no prep for the anything goes, logic be damned insanity. Maybe that’s why all these years later I remembered nothing about it except it took place in an apartment building and made no sense.
Re-watching now, it actually made more sense (or really, I’m more sensitized to dream logic) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, it’s a straight up retread of the original (even recycling some actors in different roles), but it ups the ante on the amount of demons (though diminishing the gore) and throws in some amazing music on the soundtrack. Stuff I was actually listening to at the time - The Smiths, The Cult, Love & Rockets, etc. It was awesome.
The film is a non-stop freight train once the demon action starts and there are several set pieces that shine. The Demon gremlin attack - bursting out of a demon toddler! - was terrific and well staged, the bodybuilders vs. the demons and the garage showdown...rappelling down the building...whoa. So much great stuff.
This is just non stop fun demon action and a great watch. They don’t make them like this anymore and I wash they did.
