My Giallo List
*********************************************
As a big fan of Dallamano’s schoolgirls in peril films, What Have You Done To Solange? And What Have They Done To Your Daughters? I was excited to check out this earlier effort.
As with Dallamano’s other films, this straddles the line between Polizioteschi and Giallo with a late 60s sensibility. The first half is more of the police procedural and the second half moves into more of a pre-Argento, jet set giallo feel with a jealous husband and duplicitous wife and a dashing killer mixing it up. Shot on location in Hamburg with an Italian, German and American cast.
That said, in keeping with his background as a DP, Dallamano shoots the hell out of this, with some terrific compositions and camera movements and great sequences. The acting is also pretty good - particularly John Mills as the detective. Luciana Paluzzi and Robert Hoffman are gorgeous and effective as the wife and killer and film has an interesting ending even if the narrative arc for Lisa didn’t entirely hold up. Perhaps if the film spent more time with her and exploring her motivations the ending would have packed more of a punch.
In any event, this was still a solid little late 60s giallo and lot of fun.
