It’s been over 20 years since I’ve watched this and I have zero recollection or nostalgia for it other than the motorcycle scene and that poster conjuring up some serious Cat’s Eye troll vibes in my head…
Well, It turned out to be the exact Friday night swill that I needed—Pre-Scream 90’s horror is my jam, and after seeing “somewhere in Europe-1400’s” during the intro as the impish Rump gallops around with a baby in his hands I knew I was going to love this… he out smeagols smeagol dialogue-wise while angry villagers chase him with torches as he gets turned into a glob looking stone.

There are so many movies out there to watch, but why would I pick any of them when I can watch this?!
Somehow I passed this over when I worked at the video store even though I remember smiling every time I picked it up out of the return bin knowing someone had shown it some love. It’s such a completely 90’s direct to video movie that it’s almost offensive. The fashion, the hair, the whole look like WOW we get it movie, the 90’s were a weird time for aesthetics!
Allyce Beasley is in this and she’s always just adorable. People will remember her from lots of things, but she’ll always be that girl from Silent Night Deadly Night…
Based on the Grimm’s fairy tale, in the very first scene we are in oldentimes and the titular character is chased by an angry mob while carrying a baby. He fights off the mob, pulling one guy’s eyeball out and eating it! He is then cursed by a witch and set on fire until there’s just a green blob left. Next scene: Los Angeles 1995, cue rap music.

The creator of Leprechaun doubled down on Fairy Tale chaos with this schlocky gem. If Mark Jones were still directing, he’d likely be thriving in this wild wave of public domain slashers. For now, though, he seems content puffin' cigars and chillin' with Chachi on YouTube. Speaking of based TV personalities, some mad respect to Tommy Blaze as Max Bergman, because never has one dude put in so much effort for a piece of pussy. The little lady really needed to put her Baby John in the corner, and give Max his due.
This used to come on TV a lot when I was growing up in the nineties. It seems to have completely vanished into obscurity since then. The film is a modern day update of the Rumpelstiltskin fairytale - though in practise it's basically a rerun of director Mark Jones' hit Leprechaun from a couple of years earlier. It gets straight into it with a scene set in the 1400s that sees the title character on the run after stealing a baby. He protests that it's not fair because they made a "deal", but later we find out that the other party never really knows what they are getting into, so it's not a square deal at all. The film tilts…

A video store classic I remember watching many times as a kid. I’ve always thought this was better than Mark Jones’ Leprechaun and was surprised it didn’t get the same amount of attention. Rumpelstiltskin himself is easily the best part of the movie. Not all the humor lands for me but he’s got some good lines and makeup design is great.
The transfer looks great on the new Terror-Vision 4k. Glad this finally got a proper release. Just a shame we didn’t get a couple of terrible dtv sequels, especially with the ending setting one up perfectly.

Mark Jones, director of "Leprechaun (1993)", got another shot at adapting a fairy tale character from Western folklore—this time, Rumpelstiltskin. A campy horror flick with three times the budget, thanks to legendary Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, and featuring cinematography by Douglas Milsome ("Full Metal Jacket (1987)", "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)"), so you know shit is going to look fantastic on film. Shot in cinemascope 2.35:1, packed with action, stunts, and awesome practical effects, the film delivers an iconic, wisecracking creature brought to life by Max Grodénchik—an unstoppable force of nature hunting baby Johnny like the fucking T-1000 from "Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)".
