Apparently this itself was written as a parody of the slasher genre, though it wasn’t exactly filmed that way despite the presence of numerous comedic moments.
It was also novel that the film had no pretense of a mystery and shows the killers face from the outset. No whodunnit means the only real tension throughout is who will be the final girl and even that is pretty well obvious from the get go.
The kills get progressively gnarly, but overall pretty tame. It was also notable that it was directed by a woman despite the fact that it still has plenty of leering male gazey camera shots.
Having been a child of the 80s and seeing so many of the slashers on cable, I’m not sure how I’d missed this one and I’m glad to have filled in the gap now even if it wasn’t my favorite.
