Film 27/34 - 2/2 Films with a black director or lead actor
*I had counted the original Cube in this category when I watched it last week, but it’s now moved to the bonus category since it was a rewatch.
A perfect artifact of mid-90s horror, this extended Tales From The Crypt episode is a tremendous amount of fun from start to finish. The narrative may be pretty basic, but the pieces are put in place with economic dexterity and the great Ernest Dickerson executes this slice of fun with obvious glee and skill.
Filled with oblique angles and colored filters, this carries the EC comic/Tales from the Crypt aesthetic perfectly. William Sadler and Billy Zane are a lot of fun as is Jada Pickett. The practical effects are terrific and the film has a breakneck pace that never lets up. Oh and Dick Miller surrounded by naked boobs!
They don’t make horror like this anymore. Just fun without pretense to being anything other than it is.
