đđHooptober 2020: Film 12/67đđ
2007âs Inside was a huge movie for me as a teen. It was short, gorgeous, and way more visceral anything my friends at the time were watching. We all got into the New French Extremity and it seemed like the duo behind Inside were at the start of it all. So when I heard they were going to try their hand at not only an English-language film, but also attempt to tackle one of the most famous IPs in horror, I was definitely intrigued.
Unfortunately, it doesnât really do the original justice. While the franchise has moved on from the raw and gritty feel of the original, I was hoping that some of that would be reinstated for the prequel to how it all began. But this is a glossy mess. There is some great camerawork on display but it never really feels like it meshes appropriately with the story. The script was terrible and I couldnât really find one character worth liking. The protagonist, the nurse, made so many dumb choices that I kept thinking âIf you get killed, thatâs your own fault, dummyâ.
There were a handful of brutal moments throughout but none that really came close to their 2007 film Inside, which is what attracted me to the directors in the first place. When they do happen, the editing is so quick and choppy that itâs hard to really tell whatâs going on.
