FIlm 8/31 - Second film in a franchise
I watched the original in the franchise a few years back. Admittedly, I’m a sucker for an effective jump scare and found footage supernatural creep fest, but Hell House, LLC was incredibly effective at unsettling me. So much so that after it finished and I had to walk our dogs around our dark house I asked my wife to join me. Me, a 50 year old lifelong horror fan. Fucking pathetic. True story.
All of that to explain why I delayed watching the sequel for a while. Finding seven second entries in a franchise that I haven’t seen gave me an opportunity to fire this one up.
Well....it suffers from all the cliched sequel problems and ends up with really diminishing returns. While there were a few solid scares and a demonic face staring at the camera will always get me, the magic trick just didn’t work as well a second time. The lean into the mythology was a solid choice and it retconned a few of the obvious holes in the first film effectively, but it still was a sub-par effort.
I’ll probably watch the third at some point in the hope I need to ask for company on my late night dog walk again.
