Scott Spiegal’s 1989 supermarket slasher jam hits so many of my sweet spots—the setting (I worked in a closing supermarket in the late 90’s and I can relate to this), creative kills featuring incredible knb gloopy gore effects, meat slicer murder (!), campy camera tricks, and tongue planted firmly in cheek humor.
One of the last gasps as far as 80’s slasher movies go, this adheres to all the tropes you’d expect but manages to always feel fresh/creative—It’s loaded with gore, everyone involved is clearly having a blast, and I can’t stress enough how much I adore the setting here... it just feels so recognizable and familiar. I’ve seen lots of people cast this movie aside but nah... this IS a classic and absolutely one of the best 80’s slashers out there as far as I’m concerned—I love it!
If you haven’t seen the unrated/restored cut, get on that asap.
“Don’t you see? I’m just CRAZY about this store!”
I love all genre movies, but I especially love genre movies that manage to take something as homey and mundane as grocery shopping and turn it into a complete nuthouse affair. For a very good chunk of Intruder, all we really get is the routine behavior of young small town supermarket employees restocking shelves, doing inventory, and generally fuckin’ around, but then somewhere a figurative switch is flipped and suddenly everything goes off the damn rails.
Severed hands in saran wrap, severed eyeballs in olive jars, severed feet standing in a bathroom stall, severed limbs floating in a lobster tank, a stockboy apron drenched in blood, a detached pair…
An analogy, if you will: Intruder is, for the first act, the 80s horror equivalent of 1976’s Car Wash where we viewers are just sitting in on a day in the life of an ordinary business (in this case, a supermarket) and its staff and customers. Nothing really happens in the first act here but it’s still a trip. There’s something about spending a long time in the same location that does more than introduce us to the characters - we also start to feel “at home”, which for a horror movie is a great way to disarm viewers when the mayhem begins. No one expects to be attacked at home!
More than any horror movie I can think of, this…
i will now be referring to weed as "wacky tobacky" and my friends will have this movie to blame
I miss neighborhood grocery stores!
In one of the most unexpected locations for a slasher, the night crew of Walnut Creek Grocery finds themselves stalked by a crazed killer. If you were around before the era of supermarkets, then you probably remember going to a store that looked just like this. Good times.
This has some of the best gore of any slasher. The grocery store machinery is put to use very effectively...particularly that meat slicer. JFC. The cast is fun except for the lead girl who is just awful and not in the fun way. The ending was a great big eye roll but I enjoyed everything else. There’s really not much to the story, but for a good slasher there really doesn’t have to be.
Sam Raimi sh0uld certainly sh0w his sexy, spidery face in m0re sp00ky, scuurrry, schl0cky, spine-chillin' cinema.
Slasher🔪set in a supermarket🛒? Sure why not. That’s fun idea.🤷♀️
The kills in this are so gory & brutal🩸, The final girl is very likeable, and the twists & turns are genuinely shocking😱. It’s pretty fun.
Did not care for the ending👎. Left a sour taste in my mouth & was generally unsatisfying.🫤
Also, didn’t care for them trying to make the would-be rapist incel a hero of some kind.🤢 Not a great look IMO.
Probably wouldn’t rewatch this but I can see why it’s a favorite amongst genre fans. It’s certainly memorable and has lots of fun performances.👍
I guess I got alittle carried away. I’m just crazy about this store!
this fucking movie! when Cathode plays that really cozy late 80s slasher set in a supermarket setting on a rainy Friday night, you stop what you’re doing and watch a man get his head sawn in half by a meat slicer—it’s just the best. this is the movie that turns a supermarket into a slaughterhouse, a maniac stalking a night crew one by one in highly inventive ways. Intruder has it all; shopping cart tracking shots, random body parts scattered all around the store, excessive blood spillage, double the Raimi, and the promise of Bruce Campbell—blink and you’ll miss him!
the ending always makes me say “nice”.
Don’t you see, I'm just crazy about this store
First film for Joe Bob’s Slasher Night is Intruder, a movie we are very familiar with here. Written & directed by Scott Spiegel, executive produced by Charles Band, effects by KNB, and appearances by Bruce Campbell & the Raimi brothers. Not much else needs to be said, great example of an under appreciated 80’s slasher
