Me: This week is going to be productive.
Also me: Lemme watch this 14-hour film in my watchlist, so that I could brag in front of my 58 followers by writing a review.
La Flor is modern-arthouse-entertainment at its finest. Finding this film was first stage of joy & getting to watch it transcended it. Gimmicky, self-aware, pretentious & imposing runtime — call whatever you want. But anyone who makes it till the end, can't possibly dismiss sheer passion and decade of persistence — Mariano Llinás & his team has put into this project. The following paragraphs will include minor spoilers, read at your own will.
This was my first Argentine film & it already feels like I've seen plenty of films from the country. Divided into six episodes with almost same cast in all of them with each episode a genre. The film touches both extremes from "Dumb horror" to "Idiosyncratic abstract" in it's episodes. I love how it took European approach in it's narrative & score instead of popular Hollywood route. Normally, I tend to overlook female performances but how can I not not talk about kick-ass presence of "The Girls" throughout the film. With no cringy moments, giving equal space for all four actresses in writing & rarely being sexually objectified — maybe Hollywood should take some notes on that.
I realized when the film was at it's peak in 3rd episode that — Llinás is not necessarily aiming for perfection — he isn't afraid to accept his own shortcomings & constantly challenges viewer by subverting set conventions. This made me to appreciate film better, even when it was wandering around aimlessly. I had planned on watching one definite film in this pandemic, I've seen it all. Now I have nothing to worry about.
