"You are not a body that has a spirit. You are a spirit that has a body."
When films lost for decades are rediscovered and see the face of light again, I consider it an utter miracle. This was the first effort by the legendary auteur, Chilean by birth and demigod by mentality. With the traces of silent cinema, Cocteau's fantastical poetry and Mann's metaphysical concept, Jodorowsky plays with the concept of spiritual identity defined not by what is in the head, but represented by the spirit. In this sense, both the head and the body seem to have an independent capacity of decision-making, but when the two pieces that were meant to be are unified again instead of interchanged,…
I'm not sure if I saw my first Jodorowsky film ("El Topo"), one month or two months ago, but back then, I did not know what to expect. I loved the film, but didn't try to venture more into his work. Now that Mubi is showing some of his films, I'll try to see more from him. His first film, that clearly shows his roots in theater is this funny picture that doesn't take itself very seriously, precisely the kind of way I think a film like this should be handled. It's not about realism, those sets work a charm for the film. A director has to start somewhere, and what a start for Alejandro Jodorowsky.
Also, it's so weird to see him without a beard.

A Cocteau inspired gem from Jodorowsky (who also stars in it and is brilliant), and a film lost for about 50 years. This is exactly the kind of surrealism I love, where the surreal is its own purpose as well as a method for metaphor.
The imagery is so playful and delightful, using mime and exaggeration - alongside colourful and impressionistic production design - to great effect. It is just wonderfully strange, displaying great visual imagination.
It also pokes at, and explores, interesting ideas around identity and appearance. Faces are shown as our outward facades by which we are judged, but also as non-representative of ourselves. The swapping of heads is fascinating, and potent, capturing judgement in society but also the sense of dissatisfaction we often have in our physical selves. The mime inflected performances where the protagonists cradles their head like an offering is a striking visual metaphor - and is striking in general.
Alas, after years and years of people recommending Jodorowsky's work to me, I'm finally making my way through the Chilean's utterly bizarre, intense, messed up filmography. How can I possibly describe what I've seen so far? His films are like a Frankensteinian wonderland of grotesque poetry, magical realism, barbaric imagery, and psychedelic sophistication. You don't watch Jodorowsky's films. They watch and devour you.
His first film, THE SEVERED HEADS, plays out like one of Georges Méliès’ early fantasy experiments. It's a charming, low-budget silent picture that has fun with a totally absurd premise:
Decapitated living heads are on sale! Don't have one? Not to worry. You can buy and be fitted for a new one if the head you currently…
I´ve just seen Jodorowsky´s semi-autobiographical drama “Endless Poetry” which ends with him leaving for France to “save surrealism”, so it´s very interesting to me to see what he did during his France period. “The Severed Heads” are 20 minutes of pure, dialogue-free surrealism. Apparently, it´s an adaptation of a Thomas Mann story and I´m sure there are several ways to interpret it, but I would say just watch it and see what it does with you. It´s a vibe for sure and Jodorowsky himself is a charismatic, expressive actor.
It must be an exhilarating feeling to discover a film that was considered lost for almost 50 years.
O Alejandro está tão bunitinho aqui, além de mostrar seu talento como mímico, é claro.
Box Obras-primas do cinema.
Ja is nett

Jodorowsky started out using cardboard for everything that you can't wear, and if that's not an inspiration to us all, then I don't know what is.
