As a lifelong lover of film Horror is probably the genre that suits me the least. I grew up during the dawn of Horror films involving large amounts of gore and torture such as the Saw and Final Destination films; these films immediately pushed me away from Horror despite my knowledge of the types of films that preceded those. I was longing for the days of the Universal Monster movies of the 1930s-1950s and for the original high brow slasher films of franchises such as Halloween and Scream that are often cited while learning about the history of film. By the time this interest in Horror came about I was so put off by the genre based on exposure to the releases at the time that I rarely sought out even those films that are considered essentials for lovers of film.
This will be my first time participating in Hooptober in hopes of beginning to fill in some of these large gaps in my film knowledge (in addition to giving me a chance to try to adhere to a writing schedule). The list was made with care as to what I thought I would enjoy hence the handful of cross genre and nontraditional Horror films. I have included some films that I have seen (11/33 films) and that are watched regularly during the fall as well as films that I own and that I have yet to watch (I own 20 of the 33 films) to fill in the gaps between the rules and work through a rather large backlog.
I hope to complete the films on the list and will make a good effort with the reviews but my late September and October will not be confined to these films (there are too many non-Horror Halloween films that have become October traditions in addition to too many new releases in the coming months).
Good luck to all of those participating and for those interested brief rules are below.
