wow, first thing that happens is James Bond walks into frame and fires his gun at me, the viewer. I have never felt so disrespected in my entire life and expect better from a man wearing a tuxedo. One star.
Nothing but counterrevolutionary imperialist propaganda. A decadent agent of a corrupt Western technocracy forces a Korean comrade patriot to debase himself morally and deface himself literally, so that he can collaborate with and pass for a member of the white ruling class in order to gloriously reunite his people.
James Bond sleeps with a girl.
Me: Ah never change Bond. Glad to still see you haven't changed at all in 40 years.
James Bond: I haven't slept with a good girl in a while.
Me: Making creepy comments again, now it's her turn to say she isn't a good girl.
Jinx: "What makes you think I'm a good girl?" She pulls out a knife.
Me: Classic 'all girls are either sexy or evil cliché' from the Bond movies.
Jinx then pulls out a fruit and starts cutting the fruit with the knife in bed.
Me: "Holy fuck! She just had sex with Bond and then had a knife ready to cut up a piece of fruit she also had…
Pierce Brosnan, chunkier than he's ever been, swaggers shirtless while portraying a man who has allegedly spent 14 months being tortured in a North Korean prison camp.
First half feels like a slightly-stupider-than-usual Brosnan Bond movie, but once we get to the Ice Palace it starts feeling like a Joel Schumacher Batman movie. No point enumerating all of the tacky and hilarious moments - they comprise almost the entire runtime - except to note that the scene where Bond surfs on his windshield, unconvincing even in 2002, now looks like a scene from Decker vs Dracula.
Laughed a lot. Was never bored. Had a good time. Hope we get at least one more Bond movie like this before I die.
Tonight I got to see ‘Die Another Day’ in a cinema for the first time in nearly 20 years. From as soon as the lights dimmed I was transported back to 2002 when I was so so hyped for my first ever NEW Bond release on the big screen.
Back then I came out of the film totally loving it (and saw it three more times in its theatrical run) but over time and particularly when the Craig era came along it became so easy to be negative about ‘Die Another Day’ and I certainly jumped onto that bandwagon.
The film ain’t perfect by any means *insert several pertinent examples here* but over the years I’ve slowly been collecting back…
When John Cleese shows up, your first thought is: “Wow, he looks incredibly old.” And then a few minutes later, your second thought is: “Christ, he was funny at one point in time, right??” And then your third thought is: “Good god, this movie is 20 years old! How old is he now??”
“So you lived to die another day”
I’d heard this was the worst James Bond but I really couldn’t believe how offensively awful it actually was. Not only does it feature terribly outdated special effects and bland cinematography that looks like a TV movie, but also some of the poorest plot ideas in the whole series; for some reason reusing the ridiculously stupid ‘race transformation’ concept from You Only Live Twice as well as constantly frustrating with its boringly unrealistic, overly convenient action that ruins any chance of tension. It’s really no wonder they decided to reboot the series after this because the formula and tropes are so exhausted, reaching such a low that it’s borderline unwatchable.
Theme Song: Die Another Day - Madonna
I really like Madonna but was a pretty poor effort, seeming too forced and hardly fitting the tone or vibe of the movie.
Holy shit this movie is not good.
No wonder I thought this was the worst one (until very recently), but the first hour is actually pretty good minus the awful Madonna song. I like disavowed bearded James Bond out for revenge, but as soon as they introduce the invisible car and ice palace this shit gets real stupid real quick.
Halle Berry in a bikini can't even save this.
