This movie is such a miracle. A delirious mix of classical horror and stylized 80s confidence. The sharpness of the screenplay is only bested by the ominous imagery. Watching the film slowly summon the undead spirit of a Gothic picture is a delight.

That Peter Vincent/wolf scene is probably the most underrated scene in '80s horror.

when watching this movie and thinking of what is made in its place today, I can’t help but remember an excerpt from a roger ebert review which perfectly and simply encapsulates my fondness for this film: “it’s better than it has to be”

Tom Holland’s directorial debut is a masterpiece of 80’s horror.  Combining just the right amount of comedy and thrills, it checks all the boxes.  The practical effects by Richard Edlund and Ken Diaz are phenomenal and still hold up to this very day.  One of my favorite portrayals of a vampire is Chris Sarandon‘s Jerry Dandrige.  He’s suave, charming, handsome and just below that façade, menacing.  You can see why Susan Sarandon married him.  Then we have the late, great Roddy McDowall, who has given us so many iconic roles during his career, Peter Vincent was the cherry on top.  Halloween is just around the corner, time to start dusting off the oldies but goodies.
