Forms a pretty solid, miserably bleak Charlton Heston sci-fi dystopia trilogy with Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man, and though perhaps overshadowed by the legacy and even more iconic twist ending of the former this still very much holds up for me. Namely Fleischer’s structuring of this as a sweaty, conspiratorial procedural where a jaded detective (selfishly indulging himself of every meager pleasure left to be wrung out of our synthetic commercial food processing and environmental hellscape; vegetables, showers, and women mostly) is given a radicalizing front-row seat to the corporate cannibal machinery horror he helps serve and maintain.

But also the strong visual focus on the lavish retro-future condos vs grimy, body-piling streets, militarized waste disposal production…

I did not realize what a hellhole New York City was back in 2022. Population grew out of control to a unmanageable 40.000.000. Everyone was shouting: "Make Room! Make Room!" 20.000.000 were unemployed in Manhattan alone. (Well that doesn't quite add up). Women were exploited like it was 1973. Me and Stevie G on a Sci Fi spree

Even though the big reveal is practically common knowledge, Soylent Green is still an interesting stroll through a remarkably well fleshed out dystopian future.

In Soylent Green the future is overcrowded and sticky. There is an oppressive heat director Fleischer manages to convey rather well. There is always a sense of being in a cramped space when we're with the protagonists, which is contrasted really well with simple pleasures that have become valuable commodities only available to the rich. The world building is one of the film's strongest assets, with the idea of the Exchange (a group of scholars tucked away like some living Wikipedia) being my favourite. The past is…

Genuinely surprised by how hard this hit. The film's dystopia is dirty and desperate, as alien as it feels, it also has an air of inevitability: during an endless summer people are stuffed into crowded cities barely scraping by. One generation into a full-on climate crisis (a forty-something Charlton Heston has no memory of food or the natural world), it's hard to imagine why life would be worth living at all.

Little things I really liked: the "furniture," beautiful women who come with in demand high-rise apartments. The worst film of this project so far - and I really wasn't expecting it to be.

Of course, everyone knows the ending to this film. Even though it's not exactly one of the most watched films of all time, the originality of the twist behind it, certainly for its time, has allowed it to attain a fair amount of attention for that fact.
