That alien succubus pussy got me acting strange! In this film orgone vampires destroy England by making everyone nut too hard. Comprehensively one of the horniest and most insane movies of the 80s starring all time oddball Steve Railsback in one of the weirdest ostensibly leading man performances you'll ever see.
89/100
"Don't worry. A naked girl is not going to get out of this complex!"
A widescreen Tobe Hooper epic, curated for Cannon Films as a form of blockbuster "legitimacy" only to become enraptured in its own barrage of sex and blood, absorption and ghostly light beams. Both a gigantic amalgamation of influences (Scott, Spielberg, Kubrick, Roeg etc.) and a 2 hour "fuck you" aimed towards the tightening grip of 80s Hollywood, Hooper unleashes an "overwhelmingly female presence" onto the world and observes as it all crumbles into a state of fire and ash, blue strobes and glittering souls. It's Hooper's funniest film but mostly his prettiest; unveiling green space voids and haunting apocalyptic images through solid SFX work, handcrafting a fantasy where it truly is the end, exemplified by Patrick Stewart's anguished wails and Mathilda Ray's piercing eyes. An essential experience.
where is tobe hooper’s star on the hollywood walk of fame??? no justice in this world…
I heard there’s a remake of this in the works starring Alexandra Daddario. Source: my dreams.
Why don’t people make movies like this anymore? Has the world just become completely devoid of fun? A Tobe Hooper 80s horror/sci-fi campfest where sexy naked space vampires try to invade London - tell me that’s not the making of a phenomenal Saturday morning right there.
Who cares if it was a massive box office flop? Who cares if it has D-level writing and acting? Who cares if it defines and redefines its own rules along the way via wooden exposition dumps? It has superb practical effects, over-the-top flair, a young & unhinged Patrick Stewart, a Quentin Tarantino stamp of approval, and lots and lots of boobs. What more do you need?
Underrated Movies that More People Should See
Spooky Season for Scaredy-Cats
Kickstarting the apocalypse because you're too damn horny. Hooper was given serious money and asked to make a legit 70mm scifi blockbuster so there's a bizarre mix of his low-budget horror sensibilities and expensive 80s fantasy adventure trash going on here—was even shot by Return of the Jedi cinematographer. Has a real Hammer horror Krull vibe (complete with giant bats impaled by iron swords) but with an explicit sex and death exploitation angle that includes a ludicrously naked sexy space vampire succubus Mathilda May (queen!) literally sucking the life out of people via light beams as well as nasty, dusty creature/exploding zombie gore shit. Weird as hell Tobe. Of course I had a blast.
Tobe Hooper gets all the Hollywood chips he gained for serving as Spielberg's matteur en scene for Poltergeist and let it crash and burn gloriously into a huge science fiction horror epic about sex and death. Every image written large and this is a film to be seen very eager to communicate trough large visual gestures. Dan O Bannon script is a big homage to Hammer in general and Quatermass cycle specifically, but Hopper really is less interessed in cinephile quotation than using it as a jumping point to a grand visual essay about how allure of movies go hand in hand with destruction. Blood leaving Patrick Stewart dead body and slowly forming Mathilda May naked body is the film…
Glass coffin Space Vampires who embalm themselves with life energy, fly around in an umbrella broomstick ship, and decimate London with a shit load of broken glass, explosions, energy sucking zombies, and body snatching craziness... all culminating in a very Vampire cathedral showdown.
One of those movies that I’ve always liked, but never really clicked with like I’d wanted... that changed today and I can confirm that this is now one of my favorite vampire stories AND one of my favorite sci-fi/horror movies. All critiques I’ve had of this in the past worked in its favor this time... I had zero issues with pacing and was totally engaged, I LOVED the score, the insane special effects (especially the bloody goop helicopter…
AKA "Fear the Fucking Dead". Desire is a plague. Starring Mathilda May as Rackula.
[Theatrical Cut, 70mm]
Cannon spent 50 million dollars (adjusted) on Tobe Hooper's cinematic essay on unwanted erections.
In space no one wears clothes - apparently!
"Now she has clothes!"
Sci-Fi horror from Tobe Hooper and the fabulous folks at Cannon Films about space vampires that come down to earth to suck everyone's LIFEFORCE via a botched space observation mission of Halley's Comet.
Decent alien horror with some pretty decent effects with Patrick Stewart managing to look older in this than he looks today (was the guy ever young?)
This is for lovers of exploding bodies.
This movie is very entertaining! It was a financial flop when it was first released. I hadn’t seen it since the 80s. I enjoyed it back then for a totally different reason I do today. As a late teen I enjoyed it because it has a lot of nudity. It has become a cult classic! Directed by the horror legend Tobe Hooper. This movie is hilarious at times when it wasn’t intended to be. Patrick Stewart role movie in the movie made me laugh so hard. It is almost stupid a times but in a good way. It definitely was not boring. For a Horror movie it is kinda lite on gore but still decent. If you want check it out you can do so on Amazon Prime.
