The Weirdlore: interesting takes on fables, folklore, myths, and legends on film

This is a list of my favorite movies that approach the subject of folklore, including fables, myths and legends as well as other traditional stories, from a perspective that could be called ‘weird’ or at least out of the ordinary. This usually means narrative unconventionality, ambitious concept or surrealist/psychedelic/experimental visuals.

I consider these movies valuable even though they're not all exactly good. Also, it is in no way expected that the movies on this list treat any possible source materials ‘faithfully’ or ‘accurately’ or ‘with respect’, whatever that would even mean in the case of folklore, where things constantly blend into and mock each other. Lets call these things 'crucial' in case you are a geek of weird fiction as well as intrigued by modern representations of folklore/myth.

Recommendations based on this list are welcome, of course.
