My 6th and final movie of the day. Warriors of Heaven and Earth is like a combination of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Raiders of the Lost Ark. There are three main people in the movie....The Good who is a lawman tracking down his last convict....The Bad....the convict who is not really so bad and The Ugly who is working for the bad guys and is trying to kill the Good and the Bad. Meanwhile a magical device is what the three guys are protecting or trying to acquire. When that device is released....I immediately thought of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The action is good....the acting is solid....the story at times gets confusing...but overall I am glad I watched this one.
A former soldier escorting a caravan through the desert is pursued by an imperial agent and a warlord.
First of all, the is the moustachiest movie I've seen not made in Turkey.
Secondly, this is the only Chinese movie I've ever seen with a Japanese character portrayed positively.
Thirdly, Tony Leung Siu-Hung was credited as directing the action, which I don't believe for a second because all the action was shot like utter shit.
I don't have a fourth point to make aside from a general disappointment with the result considering the promising premise.
Mainland China's attempt to slice a chunk of that sweet international hunger for CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON like product, plays like a film edited down from a 40-episode TV series. It's pretty and expensive, but needlessly convoluted, and it has the gall to credit the great action choreographers Tony Leung Siu-Hung and Stephen Tung, and then present every set-piece in shaky close-ups without any geography. What a waste of time and talent.
This is one of those "I should watch that." movies that have taken up real estate in my brain for more than a decade. Begone!
If you're curious about the director and how he got the gig, I'd recommend checking out his first film THE SWORDSMAN IN A DOUBLE FLAG TOWN because it's a fascinating example of a stripped-down swordplay film, where the action is as abstract as it gets.
Honestly about as bum average as a movie can get. Has a couple fun fight scenes but they’re bogged down by a completely un-engaging and boring plot. Has a couple fun caricatures of pure evil villains and noble hearted heroes but nothing interesting is done with them. Cinematography is downright awkward, despite how lavish some of these sets are and how great all the costumes look on screen, the framing is always off and there’s hardly a single good looking image in this whole film. I can’t tell whether it’s pandering too hard to mainland audiences or pandering too hard to western audiences, but either way it’s going in the wrong direction. Incredibly derivative but still a follow-able narrative film…
Seemed interesting in the beginning but I quickly started to lose interest. Plot is confusing and non-sensical, some kind of a Chinese Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark hybrid. I would be more forgiving on this if the fight scenes would have delivered but they didn't and were surprisingly badly shot. They tried to add magical/mystical elements to the film but they didn't really work. The scenery is on point thought, amazing landscapes and vistas👌. Another memorable thing was the villain. Dude looked liked a Chinese Rick James and was always playing a Chinese instrument 😂.
Knowing this was Chinese wuxia I approached this with the knowledge that I may have to be content with the visuals as sometimes I confess I literally lose the plot. However to be fair I was able to follow most of what was happening on screen even though it was complicated and had lots of characters interacting the plot was not too much over my head,The film looks great making the most of incredible vistas and scenery and the cast do a good job conveying the story, so for the most part this is fairly enjoyable. However in my opinion there are three reasons why this film falters. Firstly whilst the action and fight scenes are quite good personally I…
Good characters, decent plot, kind of hard to follow at times, idiosyncratic camera work. I’m still not sure what the Buddha relic’s power is supposed to be exactly. Whatever the plot needs it to be, apparently. Best aspect was that there was a Japanese guy among the protagonists. Pretty uncommon in Chinese cinema.
