I like military stories combined with supernatural/occult elements. Dan Myrick’s the Objective is very good, as is Outpost (the first one). The Keep, obviously. Overlord was decent, too.
Red Sands utilizes a cool desert atmosphere and some interesting dynamics between its characters, but after a strong first act it slows begins to unravel.
Still some good stuff, though. From the director of Dead Birds, Alex Turner. Watched via Sony Pictures DVD.
Dem Erstlingswerk von Alex Turner nämlich "Dead Birds" konnte ich ja noch an bestimmten Punkten etwas abgewinnen, doch sein Folgewerk ist stellenweise einfach nur schlecht, wenn nicht sogar dämlich.
Shane West führt dabei einen Trupp in Afghanistan an, die den brutalen Mord an einer Familie untersuchen sollen. Auf dem Weg dahin verfährt man sich aber etwas und stoßt auf eine Mysteriöse Status, die man aus Langeweile kaputt ballert. Natürlich wird dadurch eine Böse macht freigesetzt, wodurch sich die Soldaten bald in einem Gebäude eingeschlossen finden, während draußen ein undurchdringlicher Sandsturm wütet. Natürlich stellt das Trüppchen bald fest, das man nicht alleine ist.

I have such a soft spot for these military horror flicks. This one’s a spiritual sequel to Dead Birds (which I rather liked) that starts strong but loses itself along the way.

I can't say I've entertained the thought of a group of soldiers encountering a djinn, so I was curious about this as I don't think I've seen any horror movies involving a djinn. I'm sure there are some, but the point is it hasn't been done to death, so there is potential. There are opportunities for filmmakers to make unique films in that regard; however, an original idea isn't always well-executed. And I think that's the main issue with Red Sands; it doesn't quite live up to its potential. It features its share of instances in which the soldiers encounter manifestations of the djinn, which aren't without tension; but at the same time the reason as to why it haunts…
A group of US soldiers in Afghanistan desecrate an ancient tomb, which turns out to be a resting spot of a Djinn.
The men's mission turns into a horror show as they are visited by the Djinn and treated to a series of nightmares where they kill themselves or are killed.
The Djinn is a shapeshifter but takes the form of a luscious lady, Mercedes Mason.
EFX are decent in this with one super creepy Djinn trick that was awesome.
The end is pretty good, I just thought some of the dialog was lame and the pacing was super slow.
Some recognizable stars in this. Shane West (Nikita), Aldis Hodge (Leverage), Callum Blue (Dead Like Me), Theo Rossi and J.K. Simmons.
It’s far from perfect, but this is a nice bottleneck horror film that is as much psychological horror as it is a straight up “monster” flick. It’s a nice solid b-movie, and completes what it sets out to do for the most part.
Soldiers fighting in Afghanistan in 2002 accidentally unlock a djinn in this hopelessly boring horror film so light on frights that the back cover actually tries to claim it's a "psychological thriller" - no, it isn't. After the plot is instigated by a stupid, racist member of the group randomly shooting an ancient statue for no real reason, the film spends much of the next hour doing not much of anything; it tries to get you to relate to these characters (Shane West amongst them), but they're largely unlikeable or bland - yes, I get it, the djinn is meant to represent their regrets and fears in war, can something please happen now? Not to mention the film gives away…
This isn’t a groundbreaking horror war movie, but it serves as a powerful metaphor for the American mindset regarding the world’s functioning in contrast to the resistance of millennial cultures that have developed unique approaches to addressing their environmental and societal challenges.
if you want something thematically similar to Dead Birds look no further than #RedSandsMovie and honestly the twist and turns that this movie took was so good and it definitely helped me to like this movie more especially the twist ending to this movie I highly recommend this one especially if you're looking for one that has plenty of twist and turns
I will say, I love when movies use heavy grain as a stylistic choice.

Definitely a spiritual successor to Dead Birds, with both having a psychological/“ghost” horror flair.
