Presented as such though it may have been, this never feels like an answer to Bond but more of a noir story, and I love that the implicit denial of authority isn't just a cheeky character trait but is completely baked in here. And Furie's shot selection is esoteric enough to make you wish he'd actually done a Bond film; so much here is in shadow or a frame in a frame, it's deliberately moddish and continuously surprising.
An intentional deconstruction of the Bond franchise that takes obvious delight in contrasting agent Harry Palmer's dreary world of grinding bureaucracy, neverending paperwork, and working-class spydom with the glamour and pretense of 007's alternate-espionage universe. There's nary a jetpack, Aston Martin, or baccarat table to be found in Palmer's parallel dimension, just the oppressive drabness of unswinging London, although he does treat himself to the occasional tin of fancy mushrooms and a little Mozart.
Michael Caine's Palmer is a lovably insubordinate wiseass who take shortcuts whenever he can find them, chafes at authority, and relies entirely too much on his intuition, often without regards for the consequences. This is a great, very procedural counterpoint to the Bond series and strips away any glamour for a low-stakes, pure spy film, which its lack of glamour and camerawork works in its favor. From the outset, it presents espionage as something quite drab and ordinary, and closer to morally ambiguous than the full-on action of many other films of the genre. There's a lot of boring office work and government offices, which all involve grubby office politics, but I found myself super engaged in this little low-stakes story. On its initial release, The Ipcress File drew praise for dispensing with the exotic, over-the-top exploits of the rapidly growing Bond franchise in favor of a refreshingly unglamorous, “anti-Bond” treatment of espionage. And the film does, indeed, bring a grittier, working-class lens to the spy game, highlighting the bureaucratic tedium and endless paperwork of the business to especially playful effect. Coming from the creative forces of the James Bond franchise comes a completely different spy film. The Ipcress File follows Michael Caine as Harry Palmer, a seemingly insubordinate intelligence officer who gets embroiled in an investigation to find missing high-level scientists. But it gets into the mundane world of espionage with the endless paper trail, meetings, debriefings, and inter office affairs. You know all the boring work stuff.
But the film excels at being effortlessly cool thanks in part to Michael Caine’s performance and the top tier musical score from Bond composer, John Barry. And the film also boasts some of the best cinematography I’ve ever seen in a film. Some may find the pace to be too slow but if your in the right mood, pour a tumbler of whiskey and let those cool vibes consume you.

On the one hand, there’s Jim Bond. On the other is Harry Palmer. Bond is suave, sophisticated, cool under pressure, invincible—well, there’s this one time—and a magnet for the dolly birds. Meanwhile, our Harry is bespectacled, a bit nerdy, a tad clumsy, and while he has an eye for the dolly birds, nothing’s a sure thing. Now, which one are you most like? Come on, be honest. I thought so. Bond is a superspy. Palmer is just trying to get through the day alive.

I’ve seen the film about three or four times now and the only things I remember about it are the striking visuals, the John Barry score and Michael Caine’s wonderfully dorky performance. But I can’t tell you what the story ends up actually being about.
"The Ipcress File" is a 1965 espionage thriller directed by Sidney J. Furie. The film is based on a 1962 book by the same name, written by Len Deighton. Deighton's book become something of the working-class equivalency to Ian Flemming's James Bond series, less romanticized in spy gadgetry and exotic locales, but rather with its ear to the street in an urban level ground tactic display. This is what "The Ipcress File" in film form directly accomplishes as well, with Michael Caine's Harry Palmer being of a 007 brand but in a working stiff variety. He deals with international treachery and the smuggling of secrets and code, yet he gets up half asleep early morning like the rest of us…
With "Goldfinger" producer Harry Saltzman plucking 007 composer John Barry, editor Peter Hunt, and production designer Ken Adam, you might say "The Ipcress File" is about as Bond as you can get without being Bond...except for the fact that the film strikes a fine balance between the action-oriented approach of a film like "From Russia with Love" and the more grounded, paperwork-and-briefings style espionage of John le Carré. This is a spy movie with an eye for quotidian details: would you ever see Sean Connery have to stop and feed a parking meter?
And I must say the star here is cinematographer Otto Heller ("Peeping Tom"), who constantly utilizes unnerving framing in order to emphasize the paranoia of this world: shots where 3/4 of the image is obscured by someone's shoulder or a lampshade. The unorthodox blocking, which jumps out at you during almost every scene, makes the visual language of the Bond films seem utterly conventional in comparison.
Deflation of the Bond myth: spying isn’t glamorous and action-packed, it’s just a job - a job you hate, a job you aren’t very good at, and worst of all, a job that calls you in on your day off. You could’ve told me this was made in the 70’s and I’d believe you - Furie’s staging is like all the weirdest bits of the next decade’s paranoid thrillers stretched out to the runtime of the whole movie, basically every interior looks one click removed from an Escher location.

Micheal Caine's "James Bond" was Harry Palmer. He was a wisecracking spy with a dark past who investigates the kidnapping of British scientists in London.
I feel this film is more realistic than the Bond movies. It's definitely more talkie than action oriented. Michael Caine is the strongest link in the movie. This is one of his best roles. It's definitely more like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy than Dr No. It's a nice old spy film with a super charming lead actor.
