Good-natured but socially awkward he faces constant badgering from family and friends to get married but has reluctantly resigned himself to bachelorhood. I love movies where the filmmakers aren’t trying to impress the viewer but rather engage the viewer and make them feel that they are at the same level as the movie. What I mean is that Marty perfectly exemplifies human interaction and relationships in a very realistic way, so much so that over 60 years later I can still relate to it. If I were to describe it in one word it would be human. Ernest Borgnine plays the character of Marty with such realism and depth but the role is neither flashy nor crazy. The way he speaks and his tone of voice, his simple facial expressions, and body movements he makes are so believable and human in every sense. I couldn’t help but feel like Marty a lot because of this. What a stunning film, and it’s so easy to watch and enjoy.
The hell is this. Experiencing Marty is to watch overly-talky old-school Hollywood screwball kitsch occasionally hijacked by Ingmar Bergman. It's Saturday Night Fever sans the dancing and music, with the existential torment cranked up to 11. A film portraying old Italian widows yapping about chicken in heavy accents shouldn't also feature a chubby Ernest Borgnine sharing depressing thoughts of suicide. A cast with wise-crackin' New Yorker youths in suits shouldn't also sport a female lead whose performance and demeanor are so pathetic, so lovable, and so heartbreaking that it's as if she walked onto set after a mix-up with the address of a European arthouse flick being shot next door.

Marty (Ernest Borgnine) is a middle aged butcher working in the Bronx. Customers endlessly remind him that he needs to find a “nice girl” to marry. He lives with his mother and she tells him the same thing. He doesn’t need to be reminded, he exists in a sad and resigned state and he literally considers himself an ugly man. He reluctantly hits the town with his equally hopeless friend, but he isn’t expecting a damn thing but polite rejections.
This film resonated massively with audiences in the 1950’s. It won the first Palme d’Or at Cannes. It won best picture at the Academy Awards. And, it won Ernest Borgnine an Academy Award for Best Actor.

this is maybe the sweetest movie I’ve ever seen. I almost burst into tears every time they called her a dog, she’s literally so cute why were they so mean to her?? I also think I’m obsessed with Italian Catholic love stories, this feels very much like the inspiration for Moonstruck.

Marty is a wonderful film, don't get me wrong, and I won't watch many better this year.
But I love this notion that Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair were or would be somehow considered unattractive. I'm by no means singling Delbert Mann's film out for criticism here. It's still one of the very few films that actually tackles this subject with any semblance of maturity and self-reflection. It's more a damning statement on Hollywood and how it was, and still, is completely out-of-sync with so much of society when it comes to these topics. It's pretty ridiculous that 64 years later there haven't been that many films like Marty.
