My grandma picked this one and these are her comments:
“Oh Kelly, I’ve got goosebumps” (Kelly is her dog)
“Oh ho ho, look at him go”
“That was a FEEL GOOD movie”
"Pride" has been produced in Louisiana but you don´t get see much about it.
It´s about the problems of an ambitious African American who had to fight the systemic and open racism in the 1970s and also the prejudices of the african american community in Philadelphia. The movie is appearantly oriented at the true story of the swimming coach James "Jim" Ellis.
Some might wonder what for they need to watch another movie about racism. Apart from this being silly since it is still a topic of today whether you want to face it or not, it doesn´t do "Pride" justice since it´s not a movie about discrimination but rather a homage to the 1970s and a little bit about…
Pride is a lot like one of its characters, Reggie: it may not be the best in its field, but damn, it's got a ton of heart.
I recently watched Pride (2007) on Tubi. The storyline follows a former high school and college swimmer who struggles to find a job in his field. He reluctantly accepts a position in Philadelphia from the government to help close a recreation center. However, when faced with closing the basketball courts, he decides to reopen the recreational pool temporarily and teach kids how to swim. Through this act, he profoundly impacts the lives of the children and transforms the neighborhood.
Directed by Sunu Gonera (known for Riding with Sugar), the film features a stellar cast including Terrence Howard (from Hustle & Flow), Bernie Mac (from Bad Santa), Kimberly Elise (from John Q), Tom Arnold (from True Lies), and Scott Eastwood (from Suicide…
An Underdog Tale Lane Johnson Would Be Proud Of: 7.5/10
Biographical sport dramas tend to be good watches, & this one is no different! Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive tackle Lane Johnson would at least like the underdog story that’s shown here (if you remember the mask he wore in the 2017 Super Bowl run, you’d easily get my reference).
This movie is loosely based on the story of Jim Ellis, who’s a Philadelphia swimming coach that focuses on the sudden success of an all-Black swimming program that he built up with people from a struggling kind of background. There’s showcases of the struggles within Philadelphia’s inner city (poverty & crime, especially), post-Civil Rights movement racism (showcased well), & on confidence & pride.
This story showcases…
a great story. Terrence Howard and Bernie Mac are amazing. I still miss seing Bernie Mac in movies. His talent is still deeply missed
took me about 30 minutes to realise that i was meant to be watching pride 2014 and not this
In 1970s Philadelphia, Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), who is driven by a love of competitive swimming, fixes up an abandoned pool building with the help of a janitor named Elston (Bernie Mac).
But when city officials mark the place for demolition, he fights back by founding an all-black swim team. Facing racism, violence and a hostile city official, Jim struggles to prepare his novice swimmers for the state championships.
"Pride" has all its moral ducks in a row. It has the best of intentions and is about an issue that is admirable. But it is just presented with such an obvious tone that it fails to make its characters real.
Love a good sports drama 🫶🏽
Such an inspiring story! Shoutout to my dad for showing this movie to me years ago. I absolutely adore it. Can’t believe how underrated it is!
Guilty of your typical sports cliches, this illicits good feelings due to the performances.
