I watched the wrong Midsommar movie.
So I’m on this Scandinavian horror kick for some reason and I suddenly remember this movie that came out in 2003 that I probably read about in a magazine or on a website and I really wanted to watch, but I couldn’t figure out a way to get my hands on a watchable copy and I was still unmedicated ocd back then so I put way too much effort into trying until I finally gave up and moved onto the next “mission: impossible” movie search because there’s always one of those happening for all of us right?

A bunch of college-aged students head to Sweden for midsummer. It begins with a grieving woman struggling with the complex relationships in her life, and a suicide…wait…but this isn’t Ari Aster’s popular daylight folk horror…
Indeed, (indeedn’t?) it’s a different film, an earlier Danish teen drama/horror flick and very wobbly cabin in the woods thriller. There is a tense gas station encounter, a near miss with the town weirdo, a montage of splashing in the lake: Midsommer is both accessible for horror beginners and lovingly cliche.
Sometimes tense with a spine tingling score, and at other times light-hearted with a pop-punk soundtrack, the movie springs off an I Know What You Did Last Summer narrative and…
Following their younger sister's suicide, the main character goes on a trip to Sweden to celebrate the titular holiday with their group of douchebag student friends. After a long car ride full of sexually vulgar comments, they arrive in a rural area without cell phone reception and make themselves at home, welcomed by a friendly yet ominous elderly man. One of them gets the hots for a local Swedish girl, and they all partake in substance abuse, eventually leading to the burning of a straw-filled structure. But behind the festivities, there lie dark secrets.

Mediocre but I like the setting. Swedish summer around midsommar could work for a horror movie.

Egentlig et nogenlunde dansk spøgelsesgys, selvom det snegler sig afsted. Dog ikke så skidt som jeg havde frygtet. Også imponerende at Mark overlever.

I bought this on iTunes then realized there wasn’t any subtitles and I can’t understand Danish for shit so I was like okay fuck this movie i never buy stuff on iTunes and the one time I do there aren’t even subtitles??
