Two groups of travelers find themselves stranded in the titular manor in the Welsh countryside when a storm washes out the roads.
Charming horror comedy from James Whale full of eccentric characters, madhouse mirrors, portentous comments, and ominous glances. Charles Laughton loses a girlfriend, Melvyn Douglas gains one, while Gloria Stuart wards off the cold by slipping out of her wet clothes into a sleeveless backless silk gown and heels. There's some old-age makeup that frankly looks about as good as any used today (which is to say, not great). Toss in some post-war ennui, religious mumbo-jumbo, and Boris Karloff.
Weird - though not particularly frightening - fun with a smattering of pre-Code naughtiness.
