Had I known that this movie was almost three hours long, I definitely wouldn’t have seen it today. But I was intrigued by the cast, who includes Gerard Butler, Powers Boothe, Liam Cunningham and Tim Curry, and in the mood for a Braveheart kinda movie.
And it is a movie, even though it appears to have been cut from a mini-series. It looks a little cheap at times, like when Attila uses his catapults to destroy a castle, but it couldn’t have been that cheap and it works pretty well for the most parts.
It is a classic story, however, and you’ve probably seen it told many times before: A young boy survives an attack on his village, but fulfills…
Cheesy, dated early-2000s white washed trash that only cares about accuracy about 50% of the time, but not without its shitty charms. It’s mostly the talented cast going for broke, every single performer committed to chewing so much scenery that it explains the cheap production design.
I’ll be honest, I’m just kind of glad we have an Attila biopic at all, especially one that acknowledges he was definitely one of the less evil and more honorable warrior kings of his time. Not saying much, but the guy preached racial equality and cultural tolerance in his empire, united a shockingly diverse range of ethnic groups to prosperity and glory, was good to his wives and children, was famously honest and honor…
This film isn’t really about Attila at all - it’s about the great Flavius Aetius, and that’s exactly why it’s so awesome.
It’s definitely one of my all-time favorite movies. I’ve watched it around 10 times and it still hasn’t gotten old. Almost everything about it is perfect. Some people might say that the film distances itself from historical accuracy, but honestly, which historical movie doesn’t do that? The only thing that bothered me was the lore about the fortune-teller because she was a pretty irritating character. All the other characters, however, were portrayed wonderfully. Kristy Mitchell was really charming in her youth and is a good actress too, so it’s a shame she didn’t have a bigger career. Tim…
I mean, when you cast Tim Curry as a Byzantine emperor, especially on a miniseries budget, either you're purposefully steering into a comedic skid or you're not even trying. Guess which.
Why does this fly under the radar? I'm guessing because it's a cheap looking made for TV production, which it kinda is. But I was also pleasantly surprised. The writing and acting is decent. I love HBO's Rome and thought this was decent enough attempt to bring the period of the Late Roman Empire to life
- The Roman armor doesn't look as good nor is it as accurate as 'King Arthur' which nailed the Late Roman look
- The battles can sometimes feel underwhelming, when what is supposed to be massive battles involving thousands of troops show no more than fifty people on screen. But they do on occasion scale up
- I liked the court intrigue of the…
Reminded me a lot of Braveheart ,especially when you hear Attila speaking with a Scottish twang. But it's an enjoyable 3-hour TV mini series.
whitewashed of course, but you knew that already. it is very clunky and soapy, but a few shots were actually pretty nice.
it was funny seeing the guy who plays daxos in 300. I wonder if he was like omggg mr, butler we worked together on attila remember. remember me ? your little henchman ?
