"i thought i was making a movie about death, but instead i was making a movie about life."                                   - olivier assayas

an overlooked film in the oeuvre of (imho) france's best active (as subjective as the term active can be) auteur, i haven't seen this since the early-mid aughts.  this is one of my top two favorite assayas', the other being his masterpiece irma vep.  i was as moved by this film 15 or so years ago as i was when i finished it again this morning, albeit for different reasons.

"here i am."
"to talk?"
"no, to stay."
