There are less gags in Vincente Minnelli’s “Father of the Bride” than there is a gentle folly about the ritual farce of a wedding.
Watching Minnelli’s interpretation of the 1949 novel unfolds as a surprisingly mellow experience. Contrasting the later Steve Martin remake, there is hardly even an emphasis on comedy at all, with Spencer Tracy’s wry narration providing some sardonic chuckles, but nothing worthy of a real knee slap.
After settling into the unexpected tenderness of the film, “Father” attains a sentimental familiarity. In the genre of wedding comedies, there is too often a temptation to take the crudest most shocking sight and situational pitfalls and wring them for maximum cringe. Having always enjoyed the Steve Martin remakes, I’ve always wanted to see the original. I have to say I was quite surprised at how many of the jokes were the same. The 1991 version doesn’t actually change too much. It’s still a lighthearted comedy about losing your little girl to marriage/womanhood and how freakin expensive weddings are.
It’s a fun watch with Spencer Tracy and a very young Elizabeth Taylor as his daughter. I’d recommend if you come across it.

Wonderful. In which Minnelli's brand of bittersweet surrealist magic and its relationship to real people living mundane lives is rendered as chaotic, manically depressing in its hilariocity and attack at traditionalism yet always tender, full of love. The last 15 minutes in particular are movingly graceful and sublime. The last time we see the couple they are in the same train station where Judy and Robert Walker meet in The Clock and guys as a Minnelli fan myself, I screamed. His cinema was made specifically for me.
Proud of myself for naming me after the queen herself, Liz Taylor though.
