Gotta love Gai-In who just IMAGINES a scenario where her friend gets all possessed by the curse that's following her, who then throws her over a railing thus in real life is like "bye bitch" and walks off.
Probably because this is adapted, this plays out less clunkily than other 8 Films to Die For and while this isn't anything very special, it's decent enough-- especially comparatively to other 8FtDF movies, it's decent enough to give it a pass.
A high school student witnesses one aunt murder another, and then finds herself frequently being attacked by randomly homicidal acquaintances. What is driving family and friends to psychotic frenzies, and could this be a family curse?
Voices was the one Korean Horror film to find it’s way into the After Dark Horrorfest – coming with the third wave of the festival in 2008. Those watching it expecting the celebrated K-horror from the beginning of the decade, would find something more in line with the other pictures that made up the 8 Films to Die For line-up. Those that remember the packaging will know if that appeals to them. The dysfunctional family aspects, dark secrets, broken trust, may superficially remind one…
Never truly awful but never comes into its own to justify its own existence. The messaging is too muddled and themes too overt to scry much further beyond what is stated. Bitterness is like grief in that it can perpetuate - like a sickness - and take you down a dark path towards resentment. A theme since time immemorial, and though always salient it feels hokey and hackey here. Mostly a by the numbers showcase of murder and other unpleasantries until it grinds to a halt, pivots, and ends on an aughtscore teen horror twist. Inventive kills and stylish, flashy gore elevate this somewhat, but it can't make up for the lack of cohesion and focus.
The only After Dark Horrorfest 3 entry I remember really enjoying back when they were released was Autopsy, which, upon re-watch, was far worse than my 16-year-old self thought it was. Thinking that I may have unfairly rated the Korean entry Voices because I was too dumb to understand it back in 2009, I decided to give it a second watch.
Nope! The plot wasn't over my head, it's just poorly done and fractured. The twists both come from a mile away and don't really make much sense, which is a combo from Hell. The first half an hour or so is effective, but it's all a bit of a drag and the 80 minute runtime feels far longer than that. Shoulda re-watched A Tale of Two Sisters again instead.
The movie is very confusing at times despite there not being the plot to justify that. I'd be interested in reading the manhwa at some point to see what the original story is like. This one has the first half of a great mystery, but the second half has way too many things happening to make sense of it all.
I’m usually drawn to both Korean horror and possession flicks, and this is both. Unfortunately it’s way too surface level and the synopsis and trailer basically covers the full experience.
It’s confusing AF but not because it’s cerebral or complicated- actually an incredibly straightforward story and the unfolds more or less exactly as you’d expect, but scenes are super choppy, the dialogue is paper thin and the big scare moments are so shoehorned in that they end up playing like clipped highlights than the parts of some great sum.
It’s watchable, just makes zero sense, and thus has no real impact on the viewer with whatever it is it was trying to convey. Not insultingly bad just aggressively amateur.

DAY 21: Voices
Definitely not for me..Voices is a insanely slow paced J-horror ghostly that is very dialog heavy/subtitle heavy and even so still very predictable and not much payoff in the ending
The first 45 minutes had me on the edge of my seat. It felt more like a fast-paced Japanese movie with its style of violence and how bloody it was. The intensity slowed down for about 20–30 minutes before picking back up again. While the ending was a bit confusing and underwhelming, I still really enjoyed the film.
If the story had been a bit more refined, this could have been a hit with a wider audience. Even though I didn’t love the ending, I’d still consider this a bit of a hidden gem.
Overall, Voices is a 7.5/10 for me.

good for her.

A woman finds there is a curse that makes people go paycho and try to kill her at random. She cant trust anyone and must find the source before she dies.
Interesting premise but the ending ruins any momentum it creates, thus making the movie pretty forgettable.
