This really starts out heavy feeling like Lost. It’s a made for tv so things take a little while to get going, as it run through though I can’t help but notice all the similarities. Stranded on an island and battling biological weapons, the good stuff doesn’t come til late game but I was still entertained by tv movie standards. The VHS rip really gave it the 90s nostalgic feel, and so did the practical effects as those transformations finally started to appear. Could’ve used a lot more pizazz I think, but the base is pretty cool on its own too.

I had no idea what I was expecting going into this film but I enjoyed it. I liked the story even if it was filled with cliches & cheesy moments. I liked the characters & their dynamics. The first act is very cheesy but once the second act hits the film gets very interesting & creepy. There are some really creepy imagery in this film. The music is really effective. There are some brilliant moments of tension. I did feel a "presence" throughout this film. The atmosphere is so eerie. For a TV movie Tommy Lee Wallace doesn't hold back & delivers some fantastic filmmaking. This is an underrated gem.
There's a plane crash and an eclectic ensemble of strangers end up stranded on a weird island where bizarre stuff keeps happening. They find an old bunker, part of a secret experiment, left abandoned for decades. As well as trying to survive on the island, they must also solve the mystery of what the island was used for if they want to escape.
So, yeah, this is basically Lost but done just over ten years earlier. It's not even a standalone film - it's an NBC TV pilot, which ends on a note that suggests that had it gone to series, it would have been even closer to what Abrams and Lindelof ended up doing in 2004. Were they aware…

Waste of time NBC made for TV movie that is essentially a pilot episode for a show that was never picked up.
Interesting enough premise, a wide cast of characters flee politcal upheaval in an unnamed generic south american country, by plane.
(The political upheavel is what is obviously fireworks popping on the ground around the actors feet as they book it for a cargo plane, and flanked by an unshown enemy force)
The plane is established in air by shots that show what is clearly a model plane being held up by string.

Kathy Ireland, Richard Beymer and June Lockhart and others crash on a jungle island and find a mysterious science facility full of mystery. This is a tv movie, but it's also a tv pilot. Don't be alarmed if you never heard about it before, you are very correct to have never heard about The Presence. This is a very mediocre tv movie that you will forget exists even as you watch it.
With this being a pilot for a sci-fi show that was never picked up, naturally there isn't a proper ending. It sets up plot threads that remain unanswered. If that doesn't bother you, then this "movie" is a watchable distraction. Predatory cephalopods, exploding fruits, and monsters all keep the story somewhat eventful when the characters fail to distinguish themselves or be interesting. Again, though, there is no actual conclusion, so you're left with a rather unsatisfactory viewing experience.
It's Joe Lara time again! Lara played Tarzan on TV and film in the 90s before retiring from acting to concentrate on country music. Throughout the 90s, he also made a large number of surprisingly decent sci-fi and action movies, and I've seen most of 'em. Feels like something you would’ve caught on the sci-fi channel in the 90s. Another case of fine enough, takes a little bit to get going and seemingly had a lot of potential, but nothing more than a little time killer.
