Immensely entertaining, as per usual with any Keaton, with the inclusion of some very important topics, tackling in humorous ways the death penalty, serving as a form of commentary on the matter. Some very good set pieces, mainly those with the prisoners. Buster is having a bad day whilst he practices golf and mistakenly gets mixed up in a rough situation where he becomes the escaped convict. Plays itself relatively safe, not having those extravagant stunts but shows itself in ways I found super fun. His blank expressions are a blessing, easily changing from one character to another. i love how keaton's blank expression allows him to switch roles so effortlessly from a golfer to a prisoner to a prison guard; a movie like convict 13 goes out of its way to show that social functions are ultimately silly arbitrations, owing more to structures of power than any quality inherent in the human being. keaton traverses the spectrum of society without ever ceasing to be himself, and in the end, it's all a fabrication of the imagination. stellar!
Did not imagine going into this I'd be seeing Buster Keaton tackle the ethics of capital punishment

Buster Keaton’s second solo short is an outright goofy affair that comes complete with prison yard proposals, punctual riots and bungee-cord hangings performed by a champion heavy weight hangman. (1916-17-20)
To be honest, there were several points where the absurd logic of this ridiculous prison started to bother me, but then came that final shot and everything was retroactively forgiven.
BONUS POINTS for the spanking of the fish, which I can honestly say I’ve never seen before.

I felt like Buster Keaton, as it's been awhile. Keaton starts off unsuccessfully playing golf for the purposes of wooing Sybil Seely-a lady I've mentioned before as the 1920's version of Milana Vayntrub. The second two-reel comedy made by Buster Keaton Productions, it reunited Keaton with Seely, who co-starred with him in his first short, One Week (my review), as well. Seely is once again part of the plot and action, and not just around to be wooed by the hero.

Silent comedy short and one of Buster Keaton's first directorial efforts. During a game of golf, Keaton knocks himself out with his own ball and an escaped convict changes clothes with him. The guards mistake him for the prisoner, and begin chasing after him. Keaton successfully hides from his pursuers—in the jail the prisoner escaped from.
After two disappointing "Fatty" Arbuckle shorts, it was immensely refreshing to see something which was actually funny. The best stuff comes from Keaton trying to escape while pretending not to be trying to escape. As smarter folks have already pointed out, this begins to develop Keaton's fascination with the theme of "clothes making the man." Definitely worthwhile for Keaton fans.
