this will probably satiate the thirst for a new “direct” adaptation of the novel for at least a generation or two, which is a shame because Del Toro doesn’t get it. a much closer cousin of the Branagh adaptation than i was expecting, down to the inexplicable “wake up the audience” bursts of extreme violence.
