Dark Moon Rising has the generic title and modest budget of a lot of the recent movies in my Werewolf Watch. These have been mid-tier or lower in quality, with a few exceptions.
Dark Moon Rising is a little different. There's a bit more skill and dimension in it, though it pointedly does not use that skill on transformation scenes. Those are brief and modest, certainly nothing like the agonizing scenes in American Werewolf in London and other movies in that line. The beasts themselves aren't that imposing either. Fans of creature design and effects will not be pleased.
The implication of the movie is that the evil begins on the other side, in human form, so that the werewolf…
3 stars for Lin Shaye’s dreadlocks 😭 😂
No but for real tho this movie ain’t that bad.
It’s 30 minutes too long, but so was literally every movie that I saw in theaters during my 2022 binge. 🤷♂️
Mike Nichols's Wolf is able to get away with running over two hours because it doubles as a sharp character study. This movie has no such excuse.

I don't really associate werewolves with romance. It's kind of an odd mix, but that's not a bad thing. If anything, it adds layers to the human side of things while also giving Dan dimension. I'm not gonna knock that. Granted, the romantic subplot isn't the most compelling thing in the world; however, it complements the werewolf side of things without coming off as forced or too much of a focus. I think that's evident, and I think it works in light of the family curse. How would a new boy in town bear the weight of a legacy that is hard to come to terms with? And can he control himself in spite of the fact that he is…

Dark Moon Rising starts off slow and romantic, but when the story of the big bad wolf and the good wolf being father and son comes up, the movie starts to get interesting.
The production is fine, there are some well-known names in the cast and the werewolves are reasonably well done. However, the movie hurts the lycanthropy since there's no mention of silver bullets.
The movie also has some bloody scenes, mainly of torn throats, and a few pairs of tits here and there. The big wolf likes to fuck some whores before finishing them off. 😱
All you need to know about this film can be found in its two alternate taglines: "TWILIGHT meets GINGER SNAPS" and "Love is a six-letter word - HORROR."
It's a bit teenage tv movie to earn many words from me although it's not terrible. The werewolves look OK, more man than beast. The cgi transformations are a little too smooth, quick and 'easy' for my taste. More romantic angst than horror. I'd watch it again I suppose but I wouldn't add it to my personal film library.
