impressively nihilistic Cat III shocker that has extreme tonal shifts (comedic family moments, people being hacked with butcher knives, and one of the more upsetting scenes of violence I've seen in any film) yet ends up being more of a dark (very dark) character study wherein we watch a family man forced to make unthinkable decisions (and do unthinkable things) -- probably the most brutal film made that happens to feature characters named Fatty, Pinky and Fanny
Run And Kill, where one happy-go-lucky man's worst day ever turns into a Category 3 drop into morbid hell.
This slick-yet-deranged genre flick follows Cheung, a portly and plucky family man who comes home to surprise his wife on their anniversary and discovers her boinking another man. Cheung is devastated.
He ships his daughter Pinky off to his mother's, then gorges on fast food, and then gets wicked drunk at a bar. Unfortunately in his sloppified state he meets Fanny and the topic of killing his cheating wife comes up, which then leads to a hitman yanking cash out of Cheung's wallet while he's blacked out in an alleyway. Sure enough, the next day rolls around and his wife is…
"Run and Kill" is a 1993 thriller directed by Billy Tang. A product of Hong Kong, the film falls within the notorious "Category III" (or CAT III) territory which we all know by now is less of a rating terminology and more of a genre within itself. Known for showcasing notorious brutality, "Run and Kill" absolutely earns every bit of that acknowledgement as this film holds nothing back. At the film's core, "Run and Kill" features Kent Cheng in an "everyman" role, trying to be a common do-gooder for his family on the day by day. All this runs amuck when he accidentally runs in on his wife cheating on him, which even in that exact moment he took in…
Jesus this film...
A regular man (Kent Cheng) who gets cheated by his wife drinks alcohol & shit happens. Probably the most shocking tonal shift in cinema. Insane amount of ruthless & psychic performance portrayed by Simon Yam almost stunned me. Danny Lee played a cop just like he does but had very small & unimportant role he barely got to do anything where Simon, Kent literally shocked the fuck outta me. That violence in the third act is living nightmare to even think of. The most non ghost horror experience i have had. Half star more for that background music. This film is sockingly beyond imagination. Top tier cat-iii flick. Must watch.
"Your life is in danger!"
No shit, Sherlock. Dude almost been murdered like, 10 times!
Comedic family antics and the most bumbling case of accidental murder plot since Strangers On A Train are the shiny clean rim around Run & Kill’s cesspit of abject cruelty. You would be forgiven if the first few minutes made you question if this was the infamous CAT III thriller, but it’s not long till cheating and drunken rambling begin to curdle into horrific consequences.
CAT III often brings the expectations of graphic assault, insane gore, disgusting filth, but surprisingly Run & Kill was almost tame in that regard. The tone fits comfortably alongside films like Sympathy For Mr Vengeance or other Triad/crime thrillers of the era. Run & Kill’s infamy lies in its breathless descent into grim misery. Kent Cheung’s oafish everyman…

Director Billy Tang is an absolute madman.
With "Run and Kill" he tricked audiences multiple times over the course of the movie by beginning like a goofy family movie with comedic actor Kent Cheng Jak-Si as Cheng 'Fatty' Kau Ng but slowly over the course of the film it descends into a mean-spirited hell which will leave you speechless.
Cheng 'Fatty' Kau Ng is a great father to his daughter Fanny (Esther Kwan) and providing well for his family. However, his beautiful wife (Lily Lee) cuckolds him with their attractive neighbour. When he comes home early from work he catches them…

Hong Kong
The previous film I watched, Heartbeat 100 from South Korea, had a lot of tonal shifts that I could not endorse. Run and Kill mixes in several tones, but it is done right. At least for me.
Starting as a cheery little film about a man and his family, it quickly deteriorates into a living nightmare for our boy "Fatty". Coming home on his anniversary, he finds his wife having sex with another man. When he goes to a local bar to drown his sorrows, he inadvertently places a hit on his wife and her lover, but he is too drunk to remember. Once the agreement is fulfilled by the hitmen, they come for payment.…
