An island where nature comes first
You drive along dirt roads past flamingos and cacti. You dive from the shore among sea turtles and coral. In the evening, you eat fresh fish with your feet in the sand.
Read more about Bonaire
Bonaire sits in the southern Caribbean, 50 miles north of Venezuela, and forms the ABC islands together with Aruba and Curaçao. At 112 square miles and 22,000 residents, it is a quiet island, and that is exactly the appeal. No mass tourism, no wall of resorts along the coast, but unspoiled nature and an atmosphere many visitors describe as coming home.
Below the surface, Bonaire is world-famous. The marine park has protected the entire coastline since 1979, one of the oldest protected reef systems in the world. 97 dive sites are reachable directly from shore. You do not need a dive boat to swim among turtles, coral and 350+ fish species. Bonaire has long been known as the shore diving capital of the world.
Above the surface, you find something different from what you might expect on a tropical island. Cacti, salt pans, flamingos, roaming donkeys and goats, centuries-old slave huts. The landscape is dry and rugged. In Washington Slagbaai National Park you drive over unpaved roads through a nature reserve that covers about 10% of the island. Kralendijk is the capital: small, colorful, with local restaurants, shops and bars. Papiamentu is the everyday language, Dutch is official, and English and Spanish are heard everywhere. Bonaire has been a special municipality of the Netherlands since 2010; the currency is the US dollar, but the atmosphere is 100% Caribbean.
