Course Overview

This Introduction to Python course is designed for beginners interested in learning the fundamentals of programming with Python. Over seven sessions, each lasting approximately 60 minutes, students will build foundational skills in writing Python code, understanding core programming concepts, and applying these skills through hands-on exercises. The course progressively covers topics such as variables, control flow, loops, functions, data structures, and basic file handling, leading to a final project showcase where students demonstrate what they’ve learned. To keep things fun and motivating, students will earn points throughout the course for participation, completing exercises, and helping others. On the final day, the student with the highest score will receive a $20 gift card prize. Whether you’re completely new to coding or looking to strengthen your Python basics, this course offers a supportive and engaging learning environment.

 

Course Features:

Class 1: Getting Started & Basics

    • Introduction to Python and course overview
    • Installing Python & IDE setup (e.g., VS Code or Thonny)
    • Running simple code: print statements, comments
  • Variables and basic data types (numbers, strings)

Class 2: Control Flow & Logic

  • Conditional statements (if, elif, else)
  • Comparison and logical operators
  • Simple exercises using decision-making

Class 3: Loops & Iteration

    • For loops and while loops
    • Loop control statements (break, continue)
  • Practice looping through ranges and lists

Class 4: Functions & Code Organization

    • Defining and calling functions
    • Parameters and return values
    • Importance of reusable code
  • Simple function exercises

Class 5: Data Structures

    • Lists and basic list methods
    • Dictionaries introduction
  • Simple projects manipulating data collections

Class 6: Input, Output & File Basics

  • Taking user input
  • Reading from and writing to text files
  • Error handling basics (try/except)

Class 7: Project Showcase & Review

  • Students present their mini-projects applying concepts learned
  • Group feedback, Q&A, and course wrap-up
