BACKGROUND:
Mato Kuroi grew up in an unnamed but vibrant little town somewhere in Japan. Black★Rock Shooter grew up on a dying alternate Earth ravaged by supernatural forces. They fight crime!

Up until recently, Mato's life was completely normal. She lived with her mom and her little brother Hiro, and her biggest worry was whether she'd passed the latest math test. On her first day at junior high, she met her soon-to-be BFFL, a quiet girl named Yomi Takanashi who had just moved from Germany. For the next year, the two of them were inseparable - they rode the train to school together every day, joined sports clubs that practiced in the same gym, and basically did everything together. They had matching cell phone charms and everything.

As their second year started, though, things got complicated. Mato and Yomi were placed into different classes, and though they could still meet during breaks and after school, it just wans't the same. At the same time, Mato began to grow closer with the manager of her basketball club, a girl named Yuu, who actually was in her class. To her it just seemed like Yuu and Yomi were part of the same group, but Yomi didn't see it that way, and grew more and more withdrawn. Mato wasn't oblivious to the change in her best friend, but didn't think to make much of it... until the day that Yomi disappeared.

As it turned out, somebody else had their eye on Yomi; a cruel witch called Dead Master had been watching from a parallel universe, waiting for the right time to steal Yomi away, and feed on the girl's loneliness and jealousy to increase her own power. Why she did so is hard to say. Maybe she knew that a powerful rival was already hunting her down...

At any rate, Mato was devastated by her friend's disappearance. It wasn't just that she couldn't fathom Yomi running away from home, but on another level, she felt responsible. She'd noticed her friend acting weird, and hadn't said anything. Despite Yuu's reassurances that it'd be all right, Mato remained inconsolable. But that evening she received a blank text message from Yomi's phone, and somehow, she knew what she had to do. Immediately she grabbed her bike and pedaled at full speed to the girls' favorite place to hang out. Yomi wasn't there, but her phone charm was, and Mato took it close to her heart, wishing desperately to see her friend again.

Meanwhile, Black★Rock Shooter had been hunting Dead Master for some time, but found out that the spell she'd cast to draw power from another person would make her impossible to defeat. However, she wasn't averse to playing the witch at her own game, and used the same method to find the one person who could negate her rival's advantage - Yomi's best friend. So at that moment, Mato saw a bright blue light, and heard a voice in her mind: "Do you want to save her?"

Accepting the stranger's help, Mato merged with Black★Rock Shooter for the first time, and together they traveled to the desolate alternate Earth where Yomi had been taken. The battle was long and difficult, but they managed to free her from Dead Master's clutches and return to Earth. Mato and Yomi's friendship was restored, closer than ever thanks to the secret they now shared.

... That was supposed to be the end of it, but as such things go, it wasn't. A little while later, a giant monster attacked her hometown, as sometimes happens in Japan. Mato might have been killed, except that Black★Rock Shooter merged with her again and saved the day. Although surprised by this development, Mato readily accepted it (anything to keep her town safe!). The "mysterious new heroine" provoked a minor media frenzy, which escalated greatly when the same thing happened again, this time on a class trip to Tokyo. Giant monster + Black★Rock Shooter = giant monster pulp. Despite how rarely she'd appeared, she gained something of a cult following, especially after Vocaloid star Hatsune Miku did a song about her.

Nevertheless, life for Mato stayed pretty normal... that is, until she started developing powers herself. For a while, she and Yomi kept it as another secret just between the two of them, but when Mato accidentally jumped over the backboard and into the stands during a basketball game, that wasn't possible anymore. Soon, a representative from the Xavier Institute came to offer her a safe place to learn her powers, but she very nearly ran away from home rather than leave her beloved town and go to a foreign country just to go to school. Eventually, though, she gave in, realizing that if she stayed home she might injure her friends, and she couldn't live with the possibility. So, very reluctantly, Mato Kuroi agreed to come to XI...

PERSONALITY:
Mato can be a little shy and self-conscious around strangers, and becomes quiet and withdrawn when she's upset, but for the most part she's an affectionate, high-energy girl. Once you're friends with her, you're friends for life, even if she gets a little, err, distracted sometimes. She's often the one to initiate activities and talk people into doing things. She enjoys sports, especially basketball, which she's remarkably good at. She's very conflicted about coming to XI in the first place, since she loves her hometown and all the friends she left behind there - her roommate can expect many, many 6 AM phone calls to Japan.

Black★Rock Shooter is almost her opposite. Stoic and practical, there's not much that really fazes her, at least as far as the supernatural is concerned. But everyday life in her post-apocalyptic wasteland of a dimension is nothing like the vibrant life to be found on our Earth, so she's at once confused and fascinated by it. It's rare to see her crack a smile, and she takes everything deadly serious. That kind of toughness is just a survival mechanism where she's from.

APPEARANCE:
Mato is a little short for her age, but she's in good shape from playing sports. She wears her black hair in shaggy pigtails, and has bright blue eyes. She likes to wear cute but practical clothes, and seems to have a thing for star designs.

Black★Rock Shooter, on the other hand, is noticeably taller than her, and her pigtails are much longer, although one of them is half the length of the other. She's typically seen wearing a string bikini top, short shorts, and knee-high boots (all black), and a long black hooded coat with white trim and stars. Her eyes are blue like Mato's, but if you look closely, they have concentric circles in the middle rather than normal pupils. When she "activates" her powers, her left eye seems to burst into blue flame.

POWERS:
Black★Rock Shooter has super strength - how else could she carry that huge-ass gun around? Notable secondary applications of this power include super-jumping and cinematic durability. Soooo, more powerful than a decent-sized locomotive, and can leap buildings of moderate height in a single bound.
Mato's powers aren't self-generated, but come as a sort of bleed-over from her connection with Black★Rock Shooter. Therefore, they're the same but weaker. Oh, and Mato has no idea how to control them properly yet.

As a sort of joint power, the two of them are able to "merge" with each other across dimensions. Basically, this means Mato can turn into Black★Rock Shooter, and vice versa. Usually, since Black★Rock Shooter is easily the stronger of the two, they take on her form and personality, but it could go the other way as well. It should be noted that, because of the nature of their connection, they can only exist in the same dimension while in the same body; if they enter the same dimension by any other means, it's bad news for both of them.

ANYTHING ELSE?: Black★Rock Shooter is, very technically, the alternate-universe counterpart to Hatsune Miku, although their circumstances make them quite different. I've run this by Miku-mun already and she was cool with it.
