New Beginnings

This is the classic 'fresh start' blog post. I'm looking for an outlet and focus for my efforts. I'm part way through a lifelong journey of self-discovery (doesn't that sound cliche), and I feel like I'm on the precipice of something new.

I've decided to get back to blog writing. I started a new blog on blogger that I'm going to also publish to facebook, but I used to love LJ so much, I figured it wouldn't hurt to just cross post them here, see if any of the old crowd was still around. Also here is more private, so I might add some more personal elements that I don't want out in the open. Anyway, here's the new blog, It'll be Fun

A handful of things have converged this September to place me poised for a new chapter of development.

I discovered the book Always Hungry? over the summer, thanks to my doctor, and have begun to radically change my relationship with food, especially processed carbohydrates and sugars. This is reshaping my eating habits, and changing my body for the better.

My adorable vintage apartment is slowly becoming a souring deal. I'm getting less and less bang for my buck so to speak. I am pursuing a larger space to live in, which hopefully will afford some of the amenities I am doing without.

Despite seeking a larger space, I must accept that I have accrued the flotsam and jetsam of several years of solo living and must needs pare down my belongings. Especially my clothing. I have two separate scheduled

My band, DarkHorse, which I've played with for a few years is having a personnel change and taking a short hiatus. I'll be stepping into a larger leadership role because our band leader, and lead guitar player, who is also my boyfriend of nearly 3 years, is moving away to attend University. He's not leaving the group, but from his distance, I'll need to step up in more of the organizational leadership roles.

In his own quest for authentic self, he's also decided that staying together isn't going to work for him. Despite our mutual love and respect, I'll be finding myself single, and without a romantic partner.

I am auditioning for a straight play for the first time in years. Theater has waxed and waned as a huge part of my life and the prospect of acting on stage again has me nervous and excited. I've spoken with the director and am very optimistic about my chances, though regardless of if I am cast, I'll be helping with the production. I'll be taking advantage of the hiatus that DarkHorse is taking to commit fully to a play.

I keep telling myself I'm going to write a song. I need to stop being a person who is GOING to write a song and be a person who is writing a song. This video I stumbled across today is a large part of what has initiated this burst of activity.

I've started out the school year a slightly bored 3rd year teacher who is also being honored for leadership. I'll be participating in a union sponsored group of Early Career Leadership Fellows, this opens up my imagination to what the future of my career might hold, be it teacher leadership, administration, or instructional coaching or research.

One of my primary hobbies over the last decade, The Society for Creative Anachronism, has felt somewhat forced and empty the last few years. I did some soul searching and trying new things at an event in September which told me a lot about what I do and do not want from the SCA. I feel like I'm making progress redefining how the SCA will play a role in my life and what inspiration and creative or social outlets I can find there.

As a result of upheaval and renewal I will write. I will write for accountability, for reflection, for a sounding board, in order to share my discoveries with others, and to track my progress.

Instrumental
The first melody in this medley is the very first song I learned, purposely, by ear, from a CD when I was 12, at my parents request, thus proving I could do it. It was from a different album (The Road North, by Alasdair Fraser and Paul Machallis). When I heard this version, I fell in love all over again. It is the absolute number one song that I can count on to put me in a good mood no matter what.

5. The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkle

But the fighter still remains.

I grew up listening to this, and similar songs, and while I don't particularly resonate with the lyrics of this song, there's this percussion sounds, it sounds almost like a slamming door, that I remember very distinctly noticing as a child.

6. Helplessly Hoping by Crosby, Stills & Nash
Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit he runs

The rhyming scheme and alliteration in the piece have always resonated with me.

This band is my violin teacher's band, if you watch the video, he's the fiddler in the live section. For a better idea of what the song actually sounds like though, either click the link in the title, or skip in the video until about 6:30. I learned this song from him, and I always loved the sort of metaphysical lyrics. Plus the hornpipe in the middle is DAMN fun to play!

9. The Lover's Waltz by Jay Unger and Molly Mason

Ok. You get a video of me. :P I posted this before, but I couldn't find the version of The Lover's Waltz that I REALLY love, and so I figured I'd give you this one, which includes a few bonus pieces from the same CD. I love this song because it's sweet and sentimental. That doesn't entirely come across in my playing of it. On review, my versions a bit... quick. But you get the idea.

Ps. I'm boring with album names and totally ripped the title off from my favorite poem. So sue me ;) Should have been in bed hours ago. Oops.

10 Fantasy Fandoms Everyone Should Check Out

Though its a made for TV mini-series (and of questionable quality in some ways), I love the re-imagined Fairy Tale themes throughout. Plus Scott Cohen's wolf is darn sexy. It's very fun, with lots of laughs, plus... there's a singing ring, who doesn't love a singing ring?

This was a surprise fandom for me. We saw the (medicore and problematic) live action film and were intrigued by the premise. My husband looked up the cartoon on Netflix. We watched the entire thing over the course of abou 4 days. We love it for the premise, the characters, the writing and the concepts. Plus, how can you not feel for Ang?

I decided to lump all the Disney together. We (mostly) grew up with these films, and they were some of the first fairy tale stories that we were exposed to.

I remember watching these as a child at my grandmother's house. They were always more true to the original story then the Disney versions. They were more complex, and the stories a little out of the ordinary.

The Fountain is full of mind-f**kery, but the central themes are classic. Parallel story-lines show the perseverance of love through eternity. The film is also visually stunning, and has just a pinch of history to satisfy my geekery.

Another classic! Who didn't want to be sucked away via one of their books to a land where you were the hero? The creativity in the creatures here was also impressive for it's time, and now.

This show has a lot of promise, with only two episodes, I'm already engaged in teh story, and hooked just to see which characters show up and how they manifest. Not going to lie, Rumplestiltskin as omniscient bad guy? Genius.

This is my husbands favorite movie of all time. We even swiped a few lines for our wedding ceremony (yup, from that scene). We've dressed as Wesley and Buttercup for halloween, and it truly is the greatest love story ever told, with some kick ass comedy thrown in. So many amazing one liners from this, no?

This is another one that is fairly new to me. We ended up watching it rather incidentally at a friends and Iw as blown away by the world created. Though easily my favorite part was Robert De Niro's character. Too perfect.

This one is very similar to Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theater. It tells fairy tales both new and familiar while being honest and true to the archetypes instilled in them. Plus the puppetry is of course gorgeous.

The Earth is full. Human population growth has accelerated the space exploration programs, and in the past 50 years, several planets have been identified in neighboring star systems that harbor a potential for that unattainable goal of space colonialism. A forward crew of scientists, engineers, city planners and sociologists have been assigned to scout the planets, hoping to bring back good news, that man can spread it's fingers into other systems. Initial contact on the first planet, Hera, seems nearly too good to be true, lush vegetation, an appropriate atmosphere, no apparent intelligent life... Things take a turn for the dangerous when communications stop coming from Earth, and the promised ship of relief and supplies fails to show up. Our forward crew of scientists may just have become unexpected settlers themselves.

Dr. Elizabeth McBride (Olivia Williams)

Dr. McBride is the medical doctor for the expedition. Her original job was to ensure that there were no unexpected pathogens or other threats to human health on Hera. Her history is in infectious diseases, and she has spent the last decade addressing various pandemics on Earth and is considered one of the experts. She actively sought the assignment on the Mary Rose not only because of it's unique opportunity to study new diseases, but also for more personal reasons. Elizabeth leaves behind on Earth a man who wanted to marry her. She'll say nothing more about why that promise fell through.

Captain James "Jimmie" Leonard (David Thewlis)

James "Jimmie" Leonard is Captain of the Mary Rose, science and exploration ship surveying several planets in neighboring star systems, hoping to find a location for Earths first colony. He has a vested interest in finding this new planet, like most long haul captains, his family lives on bored, a luxury made especially sweet by his son's acute asthma, exacerbated by the decaying environment on Earth. Jimmie is a no nonsense type of Captain with a dry sense of humor. He's intensely private, highly professional, but takes his role as caretaker of the ship and it's inhabitants very seriously.

Carla Bettino (Maggie Gyllenhaal)

Carla is an inventive and ingenious young engineer. She's a thrill seeker, a work hard party hard type of woman. She found success everywhere she turned on Earth and the idea of being the 'first' in the stars was more then she could pass up. She's there to work with geologists, architects and others to identify ideal locations to build settlements. Faced with life as a settler, once they reach Hera, rather then as the celebrated engineer she had envisioned, Carla is torn between frustration with loosing her big chance to make the history books, and excitement of being the first in a way she had never imagined.

Maahir Bhati (Rumpinder Nagra)

Maahir is an urban planner and a city boy. He grew up in Dubai, and was instrumental in the reorganization that has recently shaped Dubai into a model city devoid of the slums and ruins that had characterized it since the 20th Century. His success put him at the top of his business, consulting all over the world. He was highly sought after for the planning survey, governments and corporations alike have an interest in creating a colony to match the propaganda and expectations. Maahir is into his comforts and luxuries, but the survey job was an offer he couldn't refuse. Living on the spaceship was adjustment enough for him, he certainly has no aspirations of actually becoming a colonist.

Dr. Sharon Goldman (David Krumholtz)

Dr. Goldman was part of the recent biological survey of our own solar system. He's a seasoned space traveller, and intensely invested in studying alien biology. The discovery of Hera, Hestia and Demeter came as the culmination of hopes and dreams for him from his childhood. He has been prepping for this survey since the call came, and he is not only preparing the biological portion of the survey, but has several pet projects of his own that he anticipates might turn into ground breaking reports. His excitement and anticipation is tempered with his professional attitude and experienced demeanor, but inside, he's a kid headed to the candy store of his dreams.

We will wait until after the wedding, then go to the manor and find the key, on [someone]'s property, under a cottage or ruined cottage next to a ruined castle, marked by shears. We decided to send a message to him to ask permission to go on his property.
Nicol sent a letter, letting him know.

Saved boy (nicol)
While walking in the market, a runaway horse came careening down the road, the rider having lost control. I quickly realized that in order to calm the horse someone needed to jump on it's back. I froze, there was no way I could do that, however I said to Cornelia and Sorsha, "someone has do jump on that horse, I really don't want to jump on that horse!" Cornelia saved me the trouble and bound onto the horse and within a few mintues managed to bring him to calm, much to the thankfulness of the noble, but unskilled rider.

Kobolds have invaded a nearby building. They are poisonous, I mix up a compound to cure the poison.

Travelled to the building, made our way slowly to the top floor, about half a dozen of them, flying, I even nearly killed one with my knife, we managed to kill them and then brought the shiny bits we'd discovered back to the manor, for the proper owners to reclaim them. Putting out the lights as we descended, I snuffed each with cool speed.

The next day, in the streets, a young and striking girl of about 16 ran into Nicol (literally), asking to be hidden. We took her home, and it turns out she was a 'bride' to a local brutish man, her parents having sold her. We offered to allow her to stay with us a couple of days, and then to take her with us when we head out of town in a few days, so she may make her own fortune.

{TO LUKE: I got the feeling that reading your color text was more important then engaging in my role playing experience, that bugged me. I don't mind that there are a lot of things I don't get to participate in, like combat, but when I AM doing something, please give me some attention.}

I have discovered that our previous Lords and Ladies Drachenheim have left us with a bunch of unpaid debt. Five mortgages to be exact to a sum of some 100,000 marks.

Melchior has found a journal with clues, that indicate that a dracheneisen door in the basement might hide large sumes of money. It takes two keys to open it although.

One key we will have to travel to find, we think, it's with a relative? The other is perhaps buried with a dead priest.

We went to the cathedral to see if we could gain access to where the dead priest was buried. Melchior accompanied me and found the burial records for Father Heilbrucht (sp?)

The priest we spoke with was very suspicious, and questioned everything we asked or did. However in the end he said he would let us in to the crypt if we clean the belltower. Seeing no other option we acquiested, and went home to see who was able. Nicol volunteered to clean it. We all returned to the cathedral and I said prayers for his safety as Nicol scaled the tower to clean the cross. Afterwards we went down to the crypt, where we were attacked by rats, the rats were soon scared off by Cornelia's gunfire. We prayed over Father Heilbruchts remains while Jonas swiped a box buried with him. After paying proper respect, we took our leave and took home the box. We discovered that it had a letter, a cross and THE KEY!

Now we are trying to find the remaining descendent of the 'lady knight', Adelheide, who supposedly buried the key under a ruined cottage in another city. We've discovered the identity, now what?

OOC Note: I would feel a lot better about the exposition and movement of the plot( the book vs you) if you stated what was going on in your own words instead of reading what was in the book. We can all REALLY easily tell the difference. Your voice changes, you talk faster, and it's harder to understand you, plus, when you're just reading, it's less interesting.

Quartus 21, 1668

We awoke preparing to face the Mad Wolves at dusk. We decided to do a bit of reconasance first, and take care of some business. We went by town hall to register our deed, and also look up the building that they were meeting at. We discovered that that building, as well as many others, was owned by R(name?), the large obnoxious man from the ball last week. This seemed fishy, but we didn't want to jump to conclusions, we walked past the carriage house in question, and then left Jonas to look around, while we went to a tavern down the street to snoop.

Tor made friends with a few Jennys while we asked questions, and found out not to much of note, although people did seem to know Felix and the other Mad Wolves leaders.

We returned home and prepared, heading back to the carriage house at dusk. We discovered we were too late, they had already started to arrive. I had brought with me marbles to attempt to trip up anyone who tried to escape after the battle had started. Jonas went in first, and then the rest of the group, I waited outside, to keep myself out of the fray, but ready should my skills be called upon. After several strained minutes of listening to the gunfire and scuffle, Cornelia ran outside and called me in, I administered first aid, and saw that we were clearly loosing the battle, a small fire had started in some toppled lanterns and bottles. I was desperate and angry, suddenly the table flared into flames, a blazing inferno in the center of the room. Many of the brutes took off running at that point, and within a few minutes we'd subdued the rest of the leadership. In Felix's pocket we discovered a letter, implicating R(the big fat guy) in directing the activities of the Mad Wolves, we took him, and the letter, and tied him up, depositing him on the City Guards doorstep.
Hoping we'd finally seen the last of the mad wolves, we returned home where I went to work in my surgery. My hands were shaking at first, still reeling from the fire. I didn't perform my best on poor Melchior, and he was left still wounded, though I pulled myself together and healed the rest of them good as new, though rest and relaxation is in the cards for everyone over the next few days.

Though, I still wonder about the fire, it flared just as my anger and frustration had reached a peak. And though the flames licked my face and clothes, I felt no heat and bore no burns. This brings to mind previous experiences, the fire in the house that went out almost immediately, and the candle that flared to life when fighting the dark monster. What is this affinity I seem to bear with fire?

(Back in Time) Quartus the 20th

I should catch you up, in brief, with some events that happened several days ago.

We met with Vasya, after discovering his friend's demise. We had hoped to discover if he perhaps had anything to do with the plot to kill this man, asm uch as we hated to suspect him. However after speaking with him, he seems innocent in his friends death.

Finding ourselves with some free time to spend, we decided to head to Stout Manor, which puportedly choronicles the history of Freiburg, and houses some incredible artifacts. The tour is a 'fantastical' tour, full of fakes and old wives tale, but it was an entertaining afternoon to say the least, if a bit cheesy.

Also on the property was two hedge mazes, highly complex and difficult to solve, we tried our best, but were unsuccessful in finding our way to the center.

After leaving the manor, we went to the nearby Cup and Crown, to have a drink and some food. It was an expensive and somewhat exclusive location, however the food was good, as was the company.

On our way back to our own manor, we stopped to get food for the banquet we had decided to host.

The next day I accompanied Melchior to visit Christina Bianco about showing her statues for the evening. We made appropriate arangements for her to show her work in our gallery during the feast.

Home then so to aid in prepareing for the feast. At the feast, we talked to one young man and discovered that one of the locals was recruited by the mad wolves, he told us the location of their meeting tomorrow night. We plan to go and 'chop off the head' or the organization.

Just as the party was winding down, a torch came through the windows into the entry catching things on fire. I ran to my surgery, but couldn't get there becaue of the throng of people. Ran and grabbed the curtains thinking to smother the fire, as I arrived at the fire, the flames suddenly and quickly snuffed out without me barely putting the curtains over them. Very odd.
Sorsha was all set to chase them down here and now, but we could find neither hide nor hair of them. She was angry, and had been drinking and was ready to go... instead, to get out her agression, she was Nicol boxed in the street, until they were both laughing and the termpers had been reduced to a simer.
Tomorrow we finish the mad wolves.

Went to party. Lots of people I recognized, some I didn't. I noted the woman from the explorers society wasn't there. I would have liked to have asked her if any progress had been made with the lightning device.
