A Medieval Parish
The Ytterjärna Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. The historic Ytterjärna Church dates back to the 12th century. The parish acted as the local form of government up until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Ytterjärna Municipality. The municipality was incorporated into the neighboring Järna Municipality in 1952, which in turn became a part of Södertälje Municipality in 1971.
The Anthroposophy Center
The anthroposophy societies and organizations began their operations in the Ytterjärna area in the 1930s. Their presence has grown significantly since then. The main anthroposophy cultural center was established in 1964. Today, the different organizations and businesses connected to the movement have become the main attraction for visitors to the area and are some of the largest employers. This is a former center of a parish that no longer has the church as its most prominent building. The unique and large cultural center a bit to the south of the church is what attracts many visitors. The area offers a combination of historic and modern architectural sights.
Kulturhuset i Ytterjärna
The Kulturhuset i Ytterjärna (“The Culture House in Ytterjärna”) is a building that is hard to miss and is the main landmark. It is a cultural center that was inaugurated in 1992. It is a key part of the anthroposophy center that exists in the area. The center is famous for its organic architecture and artistic additions. Within its uniquely shaped walls, it has a theater, as well as space for conferences and offices. In its vicinity, there are more buildings belonging to different organizations and businesses within the anthroposophy community.
Ytterjärna Church
Some parts of the local Ytterjärna Church (Ytterjärna kyrka) probably date back to its construction in the 12th century. A large part of this earlier church was, however, demolished in the 14th century when the church was extended. The alterations to the church have continued since, especially during the 17th century. The church is today a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden. It is a well-preserved example of a medieval country church.
Saltå Kvarn
Saltå Kvarn is a large mill and bakery located in the Ytterjärna area. The company was founded in the 1960s as a part of the anthroposophy movement. It is one of the most well-known brands in Sweden for organic and biodynamic food products. The large mill building, with its distinctive tower, is a major landmark. The site also includes a large bakery and a popular shop and cafe where visitors can buy the company’s products.
How to Get to Ytterjärna
Reaching Ytterjärna requires travel to the rural area just south of Södertälje. A car is the most practical means of transport.
The Open Road: Driving the E4
Driving is the most common way to reach Ytterjärna. The locality is located directly on the E4 motorway, between Södertälje and Vagnhärad. The large, distinctive building of the Kulturhuset is visible from the motorway. A car provides the flexibility to explore the surrounding Södermanland countryside.
Arriving by Air: Stockholm Airports
The closest airport is Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO), 61 kilometers to the southwest. Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), is 87 kilometers to the north. From either of these airports, a rental car or a combination of airport bus and train/bus is required to reach the area.

Ytterjärna does not have its own train station. The closest train station is located in the nearby town of Järna, which is on the Stockholm commuter rail network. From the Järna station, a local bus service operated by SL is required to complete the journey to Ytterjärna.
