Egby is a small settlement in Borgholm Municipality on the island of \u00d6land, the second largest island in Sweden. The settlement, together with the local church, was once the center of the local parish. This is still today a rural part of the island with a population of around 50 year-around inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Short History of Egby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Egby Parish has a history dating back to at least the Middle Ages. The first medieval church is believed to have been built here in the early years of the 12th century, long before the first known written mentioning of Egby in the first half of the 14th century. The parish church was the seat of the parish and acted as the local government until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Egby Municipality. The municipality was active for 90 years before it in 1952 was incorporated into K\u00f6pingsvik Municipality, which in turn became a part of Borgholm Municipality in 1969. The church congregation is since 2006 a part of the K\u00f6pingsvik Congregation, a merger between the congregations of Breds\u00e4ttra, Egby, and K\u00f6ping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things to Do and See<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Farmland surrounds this rural settlement and there are a few farms within the settlement itself. This is in addition to a few one-family homes. The coast of the Baltic Sea is never far away, but is mostly uninhabited. There is a smaller road that can take you from the main road and all the way to the shores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Egby Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The parish church was inaugurated already in the 12th century. In fact, it is the smallest of the churches on the island of \u00d6land and is built with limestone. It has over the centuries, in addition to being a church, acted as a local fortress and has been constructed as a defensive church that should be able to protect the locals in the event of an attack. Large alterations to the medieval church was done in the first half of the 19th century. This was when the church tower was built and the interior was redone. Today the church is a part of the K\u00f6pingsvik Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
