Barkar\u00f6 is a locality in V\u00e4ster\u00e5s Municipality in V\u00e4stmanland County. It is southwest of the city of V\u00e4ster\u00e5s and was once the church village for V\u00e4ster\u00e5s-Barkar\u00f6 Parish. Today, it is home to around 1500 inhabitants in addition to the old church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Short History of Barkar\u00f6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The parish had its origins in the Middle Ages but its name didn’t become V\u00e4ster\u00e5s-Barkar\u00f6 until 1889. Its church probably dates to the turn of the 13th century. A fire in 1771 destroyed the church and it also devastated many of the buildings in its vicinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parish was in operation until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the new civic government of Barkar\u00f6 Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was in 1952 incorporated into Dingtuna Municipality, which in turn became a part of the town of V\u00e4ster\u00e5s in 1967. The town became V\u00e4ster\u00e5s Municipality in 1971. The church congregation is today known as the V\u00e4ster\u00e5s-Barkar\u00f6 Congregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things to Do and See<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The locality mostly consists of residential areas with the yellow stone church on its southern outskirts. It has good transport connections to the nearby city of V\u00e4ster\u00e5s and has Lake M\u00e4laren both to the south and to the east. The lake is the third largest in Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V\u00e4ster\u00e5s-Barkar\u00f6 Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The parish church dates to sometime around the year 1200. It was devastated by a fire in 1771 and its interior is in many parts added in the 20th century. The church is today a part of V\u00e4ster\u00e5s-Barkar\u00f6 Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
