Slav\u00edn is a war memorial and cemetery located on a hill that forms part of the Little Carpathians, not far from Bratislava City Centre. It was built in the latter half of the 1950s in memory of the 6845 Soviet soldiers who perished during World War II. The area includes an obelisk, a solemn hall, a cemetery, as well as several statues while green parks surround the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slav\u00edn War Memorial<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The monument is situated on the hill just behind the Bratislava Castle from where you have a great view over Bratislava. Our tip: go here on New Year’s Eve – you will not regret it! The massive obelisk might not be visible from the old town, but it is visible from a big part of the city where you can see it on the top of the hill. Just follow the hand and you will<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As long as you do not have a car, there are two ways to get to Slav\u00edn. Either you walk up the hill (it might be a bit difficult to find the way) or you take the public transport. The buses run frequently from the city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We think that Slav\u00edn is one of those places that every tourist should visit. It is more than a place where we can remember past times and ponder upon the sense (and senselessness) of human existence. (This always happens to me when I read the names of people who died far too young). Slav\u00edn is a place where I have spent both a crazy New Year’s Night and several picnics on sunny summer days. It’s a quiet place, reminding us of senselessness and joy, both necessary aspects of the human condition. Most of all, as all memorial sites should be, it is calm and tranquil, the perfect place to go with friends or a loved one, or just a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
