Sechs helped him when he was in trouble and he'll never forget that- he wants to return the favour however he can and show that he can be just as good a friend to Sechs, too, especially now after his M-U. He's seen how badly it affected him, and watching him in that much pain was far more difficult for him than he imagined it could be; seeing someone so strong and proud and (as far as he's concerned) admirable hit such a low was awful. Even if Sechs insists he doesn't need anyone, Kibitoshin is determined to stay by him no matter what- and he's going to keep healing him to keep the pain down, too.

Haseo

Kibitoshin used to see Haseo as completely infallible- pretty much the first two times they met were composed of him swooping in and saving him from trouble, and that meant a lot. Until his M-U, that is. That was a real shock for Kibitoshin; he'd seen him as being almost totally in control and ready for anything, so to see him so rattled was completely bewildering. It made him see Haseo as less of a hero and more of a person, if that makes sense. He's not quite so intimidated by him as he was before and now wants to do whatever he can to help him and be a friend to him.

<strike>Dahlia Hawthorne</strike>

To Kibitoshin, Dahlia is the person to look out for. She's sweet, kind, caring and vulnerable, and the thought of her getting injured in the Institute is just unthinkable for him. How could anyone want to hurt someone that gentle and pretty <strike>not that he noticed that or anything</strike>?! Well, not anymore. Kibitoshin's all but taken it upon himself to be her one-man army and keep her safe from harm if he can like the good-natured sap he is. RELEASED

Franziska von Karma

Kibitoshin really does like Franziska, surprisingly- she easily intimidates him and when she says jump he asks how high, but in spite of that he admires her conviction and strength. On top of that, though, he can't help but worry about how far she's pushing herself and whether she's really as safe as she insists she is, especially after his slip-up in her room got such a vitriolic response. Even if she seems intent on pushing him away, he wants to make sure he's still close enough to her to be there in case something goes wrong and she needs someone.

<strike>Trunks Briefs</strike>

Ah! Someone he knows (sort of)! Who is also strong and brave and intelligent (he thinks, at least- he's never met this version before)! Admittedly, Future!Trunks isn't someone he's properly acquainted with, but the Trunks he does know is exactly the kind of person he could hope for around here. He really looks up to Trunks, seeing him as a sign that he's not entirely alone here. RELEASED

Fai D. Fluorite

Kibitoshin’s really impressed by Fai’s optimism- he’s nearly always smiling and never seems to be phased by anything, not even possible danger or Sechs’ bad tempers. It’s nice to have some back up when it comes to talking to Sechs, especially someone so sweet and fun- now there's a change from the normal.

Leon D.S. Geeste

Leon constantly surprises Kibitoshin with just how gifted he is- for someone so small he seems incredibly intelligent and talented, in ways that put the Kaioshin to shame. It helps that he was part of the rescue party from his first night; he still feels like he owes Leon a favour and wants to help him as much as he can. If he can help at all. There doesn’t seem to be much Leon can’t do.

<strike>Hanatarou</strike>

Kibitoshin's fond of Hanatarou in a reflective sort of way. He definitely thinks he's a good person, but more than that he sees a little of himself in him only ten times more more anxious and inexperienced and easily scared off, which is... kind of strange for him, but it ends up bringing out the slightly more responsible, stable side of him. RELEASED

<strike>Remy</strike>

Remy seems like a good person- or should that be not-person? All he really knows about him is that he probably isn’t human, but that’s not so unusual in the Institute. He strikes Kibitoshin as a smart, sensible person to know. RELEASED

The Scarecrow

Kibitoshin can't help but like the Scarecrow- he's friendly, kind and brave, and for that reason Kibitoshin really looks up to him. Who else would go to investigate a not-dead-body all by themselves!? He's also a nice stabilising influence, which was more than appreciated during the portals event.

Ritsu Sohma

Kibitoshin can hardly believe it, but he seems to have found someone even more nervous and self-conscious than he is in his new roommate. His attempts to treat Ritsu gently and not cause too much distress are somewhat hampered by the fact that he isn't 100% (or 50%, or even 10%) sure of his gender. Oh, dear. At least he seems nice and friendly.

<strike>Ange Ushiromiya</strike> <strike>Greta</strike>

Admittedly, Kibitoshin doesn't know very much about Greta at all, but the fact that she was willing to let him paint her even though he didn't know what she was doing means a lot to him, considering the fact he'd been expecting someone scary and violent like Franziska when they first spoke. Obviously, she's just shy. Obviously. RELEASED

Tsukasa

Kibitoshin doesn’t know Tsukasa as much more than “Haseo’s white-haired friend”, but the fact that he and Endrance rescued them twice has really left an impression on him.

<strike>Endrance</strike>

As above, Kibitoshin only really knows him as “Haseo’s pretty blue-haired friend”, and again he’s also really impressed by how he’s managed to help save him twice now. RELEASED

<strike>Homura</strike>

Kibitoshin is part in awe of and part slightly nervous of Homura: in awe of because he’s one of the club leaders and therefore must be important, and nervous of because he’s one of the club leaders and… yeah. The suggestion that he shouldn’t give out their room number threw him, too. Does that mean he has lots of enemies?! RELEASED

Xemnas

Like with Homura, Kibitoshin isn't sure if he admires or is intimidated by Xemnas. The man's calm and composure is amazing, considering their situation, and he certainly admires how intelligent he seems. On the other hand, though, he seems so deep and kingly. Kibitoshin can't help but feel a little out of his depth when speaking to him sometimes.

<strike></strike>

<strike>Manfred von Karma</strike>

For Kibitoshin, von Karma's like Franziska vamped up to eleven- he's his Ancestor without any of the softness and way more scarily sharp and critical, ready to poke holes in his ego whenever they meet. When they talk, he always ends up feeling like a disgraced schoolboy. Unfortunately, Kibitoshin is also a glutton for punishment and far too used to dealing with not-very-nice people for his own good- he's still operating on the assumption that von Karma can't be that bad really, can he? But then why did Franziska get so angry about being compared with him? It's all so confusing... RELEASED

And no, the front doors aren't unlocked. Naturally. Kibitoshin is soon joined by Dahlia and the pair are attacked by Azure Kite- Apollo stumbles onto the three of them and gets caught up in the fight. When Azure Kite makes a move on Apollo, Kibitoshin <strike>leaps to his rescue</strike> panics and attacks back, only to get a knife to the shoulder for his troubles. Fortunately, the .hack// crew show up and take over while the three of them escape back into the hall. They introduce themselves and Kibitoshin tries to heal himself- with exhausting consequences. After leaving notes for just about everyone to make sure they're okay and organising to meet one of the .hack// crew later that day, he browses the bookstore for a while. Kibitoshin is as calm and collected as one might expect and sticks with Haseo and Leon. The three of them head to the Grocer's to find some kind of relief and/or weapons. Haseo takes out the butcher (THNX SUZAKU, LELOUCH.) before Tsukasa and Endrance turn up. Tsukasa accidentally sets fire to the stairs, Leon puts it out and they escape into the street instead.

Dayshift 43 (Sunday)

Breakfast: Being <strike>un</strike>helpful for Teresa in the chapel
Brunch: Dining etiquette with Dory
Third Shift: Catching up with Apollo and Haseo
Fourth Shift: Meeting Chihaya in the Sun Room
Dinner: <strike>Being intimidated by</strike> Meeting Homura (hi, roomie!)

Nightshift 43

Kibitoshin hurries out to meet Sechs in the hallway and after awkwardly worrying about how Sechs must feel the pair make their way to the men's bathrooms. Sechs succeeds in drawing out his monster, only to find himself with more than they can handle when it attacks. It works fine on his wrist, but he has to wait a little before trying again- self-pitying ensues, and Sechs does his best to cheer him up. It works- Kibitoshin perks up enough to try and fix Sech's leg, only to end up passing out onto the floor. Oops.

Dayshift 45 (Tuesday)

Breakfast: Checking up on and having his spirit punctured by Franziska
Second Shift: Being confused by the resemblance between <strike>The von Karminator </strike>Karl Fuchs and Franziska
Lunch: Being thrown through a loop by M-U Haseo

Nightshift 45

<strike>Mun was on hiatus</strike> totally sleeping.

Dayshift 46 (Wednesday)

Breakfast: Admitting he slept in to Sechs
Second Shift: Being given a new phobia by Badou (thanks!)

Nightshift 46

While <strike>cowering in the hallway</strike> bravely venturing forth, Kibitoshin is found by Franziska, who he immediately apologises to her for not talking to her despite his decision that he wasn't going to speak to her for being so unfair, and despite the fact she didn't know he was doing so in the first place.

[While at Landel's, Kibitoshin has retained two of his powers: healing and sensing ki energy. If there's anything that needs clearing up, feel free to drop me a line]

Sensing Ki Energy

Kibitoshin can sense a character's ki energy, provided they are in the same room as him. Ki energy in the DBZ universe is defined as inner power and measured in terms of fighting prowess, which comes in two forms: physical prowess and ability to manipulate one's 'inner energy', particularly in manipulating it into some kind of physical form (balls of light/ death beams, etc). Magical ability would not be registered as ki energy. As such, it would generally only refer to characters with something resembling this kind of fighting in their universe (eg, Naruto). Kibitoshin would be able to pick up on their skill levels, taking into account the restrictions already placed on the characters. Characters who don't do any kind of fighting (eg, Phoenix Wright) would probably only register as average humans with a relatively tiny power level- on a scouter, they'd only register around a 3 or a 4.

Healing

Kibitoshin can still heal people, but with stricter consequences for him. Healing more minor wounds, like the kind of flesh wounds you'd get in a fist-fight, would take about as much energy as a workout with an overly-enthusiastic gym instructor would. Kibitoshin would feel tired and possibly even a little dizzy, but not for much longer than around half an hour. A major wound, such as a particularly penetrating knife wound, would take a lot more out of him- think more along the lines of just having run a marathon without any previous training (serious muscle weakness/ exhaustion, seeing double, etc), with the effects lasting for at least an hour. An even more serious wound such as mending a broken arm would probably render him unconscious for the rest of the night. He would be unable to heal mortal wounds, since this would require a lot more ki energy than he would be capable of mustering while at Landel's.

As healing uses energy from a kind of energy 'bank', there would therefore be a limit to how much he could do in one night- healing a major wound or two or three minor wounds would exhaust him for pretty much the whole night unless he wanted to pass out.

Character you're applying for: Kibitoshin
Character's role in their canon: The deity

Character's age: Ancient. He’s a good few thousand years old, but is listed as 21
Character's gender: Male
Character’s “Real Name”: Immanuel Williams
Please give us a detailed personal history of your character:
(NB: Kibitoshin is a fusion of two separate characters: East Kaioshin and Kibito, his bodyguard. However, since Kibitoshin is essentially East Kaioshin in all ways except his appearance and power level and since Kibito’s past is never revealed, I’ll only be giving East Kaioshin’s side of the history before the fusion. Also, I’d like to apologise in advance for the excessive detail, but Dragon Ball sounds even more nonsensical without explanations alongside the history)

Kibitoshin started life as the East Kaioshin, a supreme god of the universe in charge of the Eastern quadrant of the universe. Although his early life is unknown, it can be assumed that he grew up on Kaioshinkai, a planet in the Afterlife inhabited by the universe’s four kaioshins and their leader, Dai Kaioshin.

However, his peaceful life here was soon to be interrupted. While he was still little more than a rookie in training, a powerful wizard named Bibidi managed to create an all-powerful creature with his magic which he called Majin Buu and used to begin to take over the universe. This included attacking Kaioshinkai and disposing of the kaioshins in charge. Bibidi had Majin Buu kill three of the kaioshins in quick succession. Majin Buu then turned his attention to East Kaioshin, who was powerless to defend himself- it was only due to the intervention of Dai Kaioshin that he survived. Dai Kaioshin was absorbed by Majin Buu, with the side effect of taking on part the god’s personality. Buu became insolent and childlike, refusing to obey its master’s orders. This forced Bibidi to trap Majin Buu in an egg-like capsule so that he could keep control of him while they moved to their next target- Earth. East Kaioshin took the opportunity to strike out while Bibidi was unprotected and kill him. Not knowing what to do with the capsule, East Kaioshin had it buried deep within the Earth where it would never be disturbed.

Afterwards, East Kaioshin took on the responsibilities of the other kaioshins. He also obtained a bodyguard, Kibito, although the circumstances of this are a mystery. Thousands of years after Bibidi’s death (seven years after the events of the Cell Saga in Dragon Ball terms), however, East Kaioshin caught word of trouble brewing on Earth. Babidi, the son of Bibidi and an equally formidable wizard, had arrived on Earth and was working to revive Buu so that he could pick up where his father left off. East Kaioshin and Kibito swiftly made their way to Earth to try and thwart his plans, heading to the 25th World Tournament to find the strongest fighters they can to aid them. Here, East Kaioshin (masquerading as “Shin”) met Goku (dead, but on a daytrip to Earth) and the Z Warriors, whose help he enlisted, as well as two of Babidi’s minions, who were in the process of collecting energy for Buu’s revival.

With the Z Warriors in tow, East Kaioshin followed the minions back to Babidi’s lair. A short, sharp fight ensued in which Kibito was killed by one of East Kaioshin’s long-standing rivals, the demon king Dabura. East Kaioshin, Goku, Gohan and Vegeta entered Babidi’s lair and fought their way to the core, where they would find Buu. However, by the time they got there, Babidi had already taken control of Vegeta’s mind and used him to fight Goku and thus produce enough energy to revive Buu. The creature emerged in its newer childlike form, but made short work of East Kaioshin, against whom Babidi had a vendetta for killing his father. Fortunately, Babidi and Buu were distracted before the final blow could be struck, and both East Kaioshin and Gohan were defeated. With the last of his energy, East Kaioshin used his power to ensure that Gohan, mortally wounded, landed in a safe place. Meanwhile, a wish made on the dragon balls to bring those killed so far back to life revived Kibito, who found the two of them, healed them and took them back to Kaioshinkai to come up with a new plan.

Back on Kaioshinkai, East Kaioshin suggested that Gohan try to use the Z Sword, a legendary Excalibur-like sword on the planet that had been trapped in a rock for centuries. Gohan managed to pull the sword out and, with the help of Goku (who had tracked him down to Kaioshinkai once his time on Earth had run out), began to train with it. It was here that East Kaioshin came up with the bright idea of testing the sword on kacheen, the hardest substance in the universe. Naturally, the sword snapped clean in two, but with a happy side-effect: it also released the spirit trapped inside it, none other than East Kaioshin’s ancestor, the Elder Kaioshin. Elder Kaioshin set about scolding East Kaioshin for his inability to protect the universe himself and promptly placed him on support duty.

This marked the start of a long trend. On a suggestion by his ancestor, East Kaioshin and Kibito were fused through the use of their potara earrings. It was only then that, to the newly-christened Kibitoshin’s shock, it was revealed that the fusion was permanent.

When put actually into action, however, the eventual fusion between Goku and Vegeta failed to achieve anything in the fight against Buu except forcing it back into its original form- the form that killed Kibitoshin’s colleagues. Kibitoshin recovered from his panic attack just in time to teleport those left on Earth back to Kaioshinkai before Buu destroyed the entire planet. Buu followed them to the planet, prompting Kibitoshin to take everyone else to a distant planet where they would be safe while Goku and Vegeta fought on.

From here on, Kibitoshin could only watch on and hope that they would win, despite being desperate to try and help the two of them. Later on in the fight, Kibitoshin teleported to the planet Namek with Dende and his ancestor in order to use the planet’s dragon balls to revive the population of Earth. Eventually, once the battle had been won, Kibitoshin helped heal the warriors who had been wounded in the fight, took them back to Earth and then retired to Kaioshinkai to rest and continue his training.

Ten years later, Kibitoshin was forced back into action when the alien Bebi attacked Earth. Once again, he teleported to Earth just in time to save Goku from a fatal attack- unfortunately, this time he also accidentally dropped Goku through a dimensional rift on the way back. Goku made his way out eventually and Kibitoshin retrieved him, taking him back to Kaioshinkai for training. During the eventual showdown, Kibitoshin, determined to help, took the opportunity to sneak into the guardian of the Earth’s lookout to steal the Sacred Water, with which he could heal all those infected by Bebi’s eggs before returning to Kaioshinkai to watch the rest of the fight.

The remainder of his time in the series was spent as a helpless spectator with his ancestor; Kibitoshin looked on and panic (naturally) as the Black Star Dragon Balls nearly resulted in the destruction of the Earth.

Please give us a detailed description of your character's personality: If there’s one thing no one can accuse Kibitoshin of, it’s not trying hard enough. Sure, he’s a nice guy, but more than anything in the world he wants to prove to everyone that he isn’t as clueless as he seems- that, despite all his failings, he’s a useful, solid member of the team. After all, he may have given up the usual outward display of godliness a while ago now but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to be taken seriously.

Unfortunately, ‘dysfunctional’ often seems to be the only way to describe him. Having never finished his training, Kibitoshin lacks much of the knowledge and power that usually accompany a god of his standing, as well as any sense of bearing; his tendency to leap in head first without any kind of plan never fails to amaze his comrades, as does his astounding ability to tie himself in knots when the pressure’s on. Kibitoshin has turned tripping over his own feet into an art form. That’s not even mentioning the clumsiness, absent-mindedness and all-around ditziness. And suffice it to say, he doesn’t score very highly in the brains department- or the brawn department, either.

Fortunately for him, he makes up for these faults with sheer enthusiasm and energy; if there’s a job that needs to be done, he’ll do it! What, there’s nothing he can do? Then he’ll be rooting for you all the way! In essence, he’s the universe’s most highly qualified cheerleader. It’s just a shame that such enthusiasm only blinds him to the obvious and makes him all the more likely to screw up.

Having said that, cheerleaders very rarely end up as supreme rulers of said universe, and Kibitoshin’s responsibilities weigh extraordinarily heavily on his shoulders. Acutely aware of his own inexperience, he often blames himself and his inability for virtually everything that goes wrong in the world: what kind of a god am I anyway? Thanks to this rather self-destructive habit, he, more often than not, finds himself descending into a self-pitying, panicking bundle of raw nerves who can barely sit still for more than three seconds without working himself into a tizzy whenever things go wrong. This is also where his eagerness to help stems from. When centuries of your own failure lead to the destruction of several planets and almost the entire universe, only to have the next man you meet fix your mistakes in less than three days and then essentially take over your job… Well. You’d do anything just to reassert your usefulness. The fact that Kibitoshin has relinquished his role as guardian of the universe to mortals only exacerbates this anxiety.

But despite this, Kibitoshin is one of the most genuinely sweet-natured people you could ever hope to meet. While the numerous disappointments in his life might harden the average man into a bitter cynic, he has instead managed to turn himself into an irrepressibly cheerful and optimistic young man. More than anything he wants to live, possessing a strong desire to protect life. If someone’s in trouble, he’ll do anything at all to help them, even throw himself on the proverbial grenade if it would mean saving another.

On top of all that, he’s naturally curious and has a real thirst for knowledge; maybe once he’s finished his education he’ll be able to set things straight! Naturally he is overwhelmingly (some might say excessively) respectful of his superiors because of this, a trait that has the unfortunate downside of naïveté. He’d probably believe anything an ‘elder’ told him and defend their words to his last breath, only to become very embarrassed and apologetic when proved wrong.

As the friendly, honest sort, he tries his hardest to get on with (and, more importantly, help) people whenever he can and is a natural peacekeeper- often why he finds himself scolding troublemakers in the role of ‘voice of reason amongst raving lunatics’. Well, someone has to do it. And if it’ll help the situation any, Kibitoshin’s only too happy to oblige.

Please give us a detailed physical description of your character: The first thing one would notice about Kibitoshin is that he has very pale skin and slightly pointed ears in his human form, both of which give him an alien, ethereal quality. He’s tallish, of a slim-to-medium build and somewhat doll-faced with large black eyes which are, more often then not, either creased with concern or wide with wonder. A high widow’s peak trails down into a mass of thick white hair to his waist.

At Landel's, he has been placed into a more 'human' form; he now as very pale skin and an approximation of human ears, although they are still rather pointed.

What point in time are you taking your character from when he/she appears at Landel's?: I'd take him from after the end of Dragon Ball GT.

What kinds of magical/special/crazy powers does your character have, if any?: Along with the usual flight and ki-based abilities, Kibitoshin has the following notable powers:

Sensing ki-energy: Detecting the ki-energy of others- how strong another fighter is, who they are (if they cannot be seen), etc. This works the same way as the rest of Dragon Ball’s cast, but Kibitoshin’s ability to sense ki-energy is particularly sensitive.

Instantaneous Movement: Teleportation. He can apply this to anywhere in the universe and through dimensions.

Magic Materialism: The ability to create objects out of thin air, although Kibitoshin isn’t particularly good at it. His crystal balls never work.

Healing: Self-explanatory. Kibitoshin can heal just about any wound, although the more powerful the person is, the more energy it takes to heal them- for example, Goku is much, much more powerful than himself, so the energy needed to heal him far surpasses the energy Kibitoshin is able to muster, and thus healing him completely would be out of the question.

If present, how do you plan to tweak those powers to make him/her appropriately hindered in the setting of Landel's?: Detailed explanation here.

Does your character have any other non-magical skills or abilities that we should know about?: He can hold his own in hand-to-hand combat, though by Dragon Ball standards he’s nothing special.

How about improbable appendages?: THE SCOUTER SAYS HIS POWER LEVEL IS OVER 9000 D<

Please give us an idea of where you'd like to take your character within the scope of the Landel's Damned RP: Kibitoshin has never coped well with working independently so his first move would probably be to make as many friends and alliances as possible. Being a support character in Dragon Ball he’d probably adopt a similar role at Landel’s- the classic healer/helper type. Institute or no Institute, he’s still the guardian of the universe, and that means putting other people first. While his long-term aim would obviously be escape, his primary focus would be on helping other people reach their goals and protecting them from harm.

What kind of psychological effect do you see Landel's Institute having on your character?: Looking at the situation optimistically, being at Landel’s would be a godsend for Kibitoshin. Puns aside, it would finally place him on a more even playing field than he’s ever been in before; it’s hard to prove your worth to the rest of your team when they all outstrip you by miles. To him, his stay at Landel’s would have the potential to be a prime opportunity for him to improve himself and be genuinely useful to those around him.

Of course, this would have other, less positive consequences. As his desire to prove himself increased, so would his self-doubt; stripped of many of his powers he would feel very weak and impotent which in turn would bring out his tendency to panic in difficult situations. Faced with dangerous circumstances he may become even more hysterical than normal. The fear that he is nothing more than a burden on those around him would become even more pronounced than usual, leading to an increased need for reassurance when things turn out for the worse. Even more so he would take any failures on his behalf very seriously and be excessively hard on himself over them.

In the long run, however, things would start to look up. It would force Kibitoshin into a much more active role than he’s ever taken before; he’s never been in a position where he can’t just call for <s>an almighty deus ex machina</s> Goku or the dragon balls to save the day if things get out of hand. Having been forced into a situation in which he would have to rely on himself alone a hell of a lot more than usual, he could start to become more independent as a person, perhaps even maturing a little from experience.

Given that this RP takes place in an unsettling and outright horrific environment, how do you justify your character as being appropriate in both body and mind for this kind of setting?: Violence is the key currency in the Dragon Ball universe (which, let’s face it, is pretty screwed up anyway), and on top of that, Kibitoshin watched most of his closest friends being slaughtered during the first and second attacks by Majin Buu. Both parts of his ‘being’, Kibito and East Kaioshin, have also either been killed or stared death in the face before.

Third-Person Sample:

He just couldn’t put his finger on what the problem was.

Great fluffy drifts of clouds wafted lazily overhead and somewhere in the distance he could hear the gurgle of a waterfall over the wisps of wind breezing through the long grass around him. But Kibitoshin could only give a defeated little sigh and sit himself upright again, shaking his head in dismay. He couldn’t enjoy it.

He stole a brief glance over to where the Elder Kai sat by the water’s edge, reading a comic book and listening to music. How did he do that? The entire universe could be at stake and he was just sitting around! It wasn’t as though he didn’t trust Goku to protect Earth by himself- no one would be able to do that better than him - but the idea that the two of them weren’t even trying to help him… well, it was just plain wrong.

“You’re doing it again.”

Kibitoshin nearly leapt out of his skin. His ancestor eyed him lazily over the comic book. “W-what?”

“Acting like a cat on an electric fence.” The Elder Kai turned the page, unconcerned. “It’s very distracting.”

“Acting like a…?” Kibitoshin flushed indignantly. Cat on an electric fence indeed! “Not to be disrespectful, ancestor, but there’s a war going on down on Earth and we aren’t even trying to help! How can I not be worried?”

The page turned again. “There’s nothing you can do. If you were to get involved you’d just be a distraction. Goku can handle it.”

Kibitoshin sighed again, lowering his gaze to the grass again. As much as it pained him to admit it, his ancestor was probably right. But still… he looked up forlornly, eyes wide. “You’re sure there’s nothing I can do?” His voice teetered somewhere between hopeful and desperate. “I just can’t sit back and let things happen. I know I can’t do much, but…”

There was a pause. Kibitoshin held his breath, silently wishing that he had someone to pray to for luck.

“Fine, fine, fine!” The Elder Kai snapped his comic book shut, clutching his forehead in one withered hand. “If you’re that desperate to help you might as well head down to Earth and start healing the injured.”

It was as though the sun had suddenly come out from behind a cloud. The younger kai’s face lit up like a beacon and he was on his feet in a flash, shaking the grass from his hair and straightening his uniform with a newfound eagerness. He even saluted. “I won’t let you down, sir! I promise!” he chirped, and he truly meant every word. No way was he going to let an opportunity like this slide! “I’ll do my very best!”

By this point the Elder Kai was waving dismissively at him and grumbling indistinctly under his breath, but Kibitoshin barely noticed. At last, some real action! Okay, okay, so maybe he wouldn’t be able to help with the actual fight, but who knew? His being there might actually make a difference to someone. And wasn’t that the important thing?

Giving himself one last check he rearranged his expression into something a little more serious (this wasn’t a smiling situation…) and began to focus his buzzing mind.

Earth, here I come!

First-Person Sample:

Today my ancestor told me that I need to relax more.
