Evacuations lifted for Prince George area, wildfire contained

The evacuation orders for the Prince George Community, including properties east of the traffic circle on Vanderbilt Blvd, have been lifted according to Georgetown County Emergency Management.

Officials said Prince George Oceanside residents should closely monitor conditions as things could change quickly.

The fire is contained at this time and no structures were damaged. Fire crews will remain onsite overnight to keep an eye on things.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission will officially determine the size of the fire, but rough estimates from crews on the ground is "hundreds" of acres.

The clubhouse at Prince George Riverside and the Waccamaw Regional Recreation Center were available for evacuees.

Pawley's Island police said they were monitoring things, but there was no immediate threat to Pawley's Island homes Saturday afternoon. However, smoke may be an issue, and officials recommend keeping windows closed.

On Saturday, a fire flared up in the Prince George area from a prescribed burn near Arcadia Plantation earlier this week, according to Jackie Broach, public information officer.

Broach said crews have equipment staged in Prince George while the South Carolina Forestry Commission worked to install new fire brakes with some of their plows.

Midway Fire Rescue had two apparatus and a battalion chief on the scene, and the South Carolina Forestry Commission had three plows operating in the woods and an aircraft monitoring overhead. SCFC planes were seen dropping loads of water onto the wildfire throughout the afternoon.

Broach said there's been numerous brushfires on the county side throughout the day.
