CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Head Men's Basketball Coach Aaron Fearne has announced Coastal Carolina transfer Kylan Blackmon as the first signing of the 49ers' 2024 recruiting class.
"KB has performed very well in his college career," said Coach Fearne. "He plays with a great mixture of physicality and skill on the perimeter. We look forward to him making major contributions with his experience and toughness."
Blackmon signed with Charlotte after spending the past two seasons (2022-2024) with Coastal Carolina. The Oxford, Miss. native joins the 49ers with one year of eligibility remaining after starting his career at Northeast Mississippi Community College, where he played from 2020 to 2022.
In his Chanticleers' career, Blackmon started 33 of the 56 games he appeared in, averaging 8.3 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 36.2 percent from three-point range. The 6'3" guard averaged 14.3 points across 48 appearances (43 starts) at Northeast Mississippi Community College.
In 2023-24, Blackmon started 28 of 31 games for Coastal Carolina. He was the team's third-leading scorer with 11.4 points and he led the team with 57 three-pointers and 37 steals. He scored double figures in 17 games, including a career-high 31 points against Georgia Southern on February 15, 2024. He shot 11-of-14 from the field and six-of-eight from deep versus the Eagles.
Blackmon brings additional perimeter shooting from the guard position to the Queen City. He shot 35.8 percent from deep last season, which was 11th in the Sun Belt, and his 57 three-point makes would be the most for Charlotte last season. He also brings more physicality, evidenced by his 119 free throw attempts that led Chanticleers in 2023-24. 119 free throws would be the third-most for Charlotte last season.Â
The 49ers went 19-12 overall in 2023-24 under Fearne, who was elevated from interim head coach to permanent during the season. In their first season in the American Athletic Conference, the Niners finished third, the best league finish for Charlotte since 2006.
