Taxi Insurance is built for drivers who carry passengers for Hire and Reward.
It’s not the same as standard car insurance. It’s designed to cover the extra risks that come with transporting passengers in exchange for payment. If you drive a taxi part-time or full-time, Taxi Insurance is coverage that’s made with your job in mind.
Looking for Taxi Insurance? We can help. We have offices located in key regions across the UK, and teams of specialists with unrivalled local knowledge. You can request a quote from us by starting a quote online, giving us a call, or by visiting your local Patons Insurance office.

Looking for the right Taxi Insurance can be time-consuming, and we know that time off the road is money lost for taxi drivers.
Why not let us do the hard work for you? We’ve been insurance brokers for taxis and private hire drivers in the UK since 1972, and we compare quotes from the UK’s leading taxi insurers to give customers our best possible quote for their insurance.

Get your quote from someone you can trust. We have access to a wide panel of specialist insurers, allowing us to offer competitive rates. With thousands of taxi drivers already insured with us and over one thousand 5 star reviews on Feefo, you can trust you’re in safe hands.
We also offer flexible payment options, meaning you can pay in monthly instalments to help spread the cost.

If you drive a taxi for a living, you’ll need Taxi Insurance to provide you with the right level of cover for work. Standard car insurance will not cover you. This is because taxi drivers carry passengers for reward, cover more mileage than the typical domestic car, and typically drive during peak times during the day and throughout the evening.
We take pride in finding the right level of cover for our customers and giving them peace of mind that they’re insured on the road.

Public Hire Taxi Insurance is for taxis that can be flagged down on the street or picked up at a rank without a booking, like black cabs or Hackney Carriages.
Private Hire Insurance will cover you if your journeys are all pre-booked. This includes minicabs and drivers who work with ride-hailing Apps like Uber and Bolt. It’s specifically made for drivers who can’t pick up passengers without a booking.
Taxi Fleet Insurance is designed for businesses operating three or more vehicles. It keeps things simple by covering all your vehicles under one policy, rather than individually.

Comprehensive is the highest level of cover you can take out for Taxi Insurance. It’s generally recommended for all taxi drivers because it covers you in most accident scenarios, including damage to your own vehicle.
Third-Party, Fire and Theft protects your cab if it’s stolen or damaged by fire, and it also covers you if you cause damage to someone else’s vehicle or injure a third party. However, it doesn’t cover any accidental damage to your own vehicle.
Third-Party Only is the minimum level of cover you can take out. It protects you if you cause damage to someone else’s vehicle or injure a third party, but it won’t cover your own cab.
You also have the option to take out additional policies alongside your standard Taxi Insurance cover for extra protection.
Breakdown Cover provides specialised assistance for high-mileage vehicles such as taxis, helping minimise the disruption to your work caused by breakdowns.
Public Liability Insurance protects you against claims unrelated to driving your cab, such as injuries caused by tripping over passenger luggage you’ve unloaded.
Excess Protection Insurance allows you to reclaim excess payments for fault claims up to a limit specified by the insurance provider.
Legal Expenses Insurance covers legal costs for non-fault claims, protecting you from expensive bills resulting from legal disputes.

The cost of your Taxi Insurance can depend on a variety of things, including:

Depending on the insurer, you can take steps to reduce premiums, such as:

We’ll need some information about your cab, such as the make of the vehicle and its year of manufacture, as well as some details about you, including the licensing authority you work for.
To go over your details and make sure that we have all the information we need to get you some quotes.
Once we have everything we need about you and your cab, we’ll contact our panel of insurers to find the best quote possible for your Taxi Insurance.
There are many ways you can benefit from taking a policy out with Patons Insurance, these include:
Taxi Insurance covers a driver and their vehicle when operating for Hire & Reward – they cannot legally operate without it.
Public Hire Insurance and Private Hire Insurance are more expensive than insuring the same vehicle for domestic use only. This is because they spend more time on the road at times, in areas of higher risk, and they are being used for business.
In the event of an accident, an insurer will have to consider the taxi, the driver, any passengers and property, as well as any third-party vehicles involved.
Domestic insurance policies do not cover a vehicle to be used as a taxi.
As with domestic vehicles, taxi insurers typically provide three levels of cover - third party, third party, fire and theft and fully comprehensive.
The legal minimum requirement is third-party cover, which all drivers have to take out in order to operate a taxi.

It’s difficult to give a figure because of the number of factors taken into account when calculating premiums, including the age and experience of the driver. The age of the taxi, whether it is private hire or public hire and the licensing authority it operates in also affects the cost, with larger towns and cities often attracting higher premiums.
Currently, there are three types of Taxi Insurance. Public Hire Taxi Insurance, Private Hire Taxi Insurance and Taxi Fleet Insurance.
Public Hire Insurance - Public Hire insurance is for taxis that can be flagged down in the street and do not have to pre-booked
Private Hire Insurance - Private Hire taxis must be pre-booked through an operator or app
Taxi Fleet Insurance – Taxi Fleet Insurance is for somebody with more than 3 taxis. A Fleet policy allows them all to be insured under the same policy rather than individually.
Private Hire Taxi Insurance is a type of insurance that covers a vehicle to be used as a Private Hire Taxi. A Private Hire Taxi is a taxi that must be booked via an operator or app prior to the journey. They cannot be flagged down off the street.
