OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – University of Hawai'i cornerback
Cam Stone is among 35 defensive backs selected to the Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List as announced by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Association. The award is given to college football's best defensive back based on performance on the field, athletic ability, and character.
Stone, a transfer from Wyoming, earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors last season for the Cowboys. The Angleton, Texas native posted 10 pass breakups and two interceptions. Last month, he was named to the preseason all-MW team as selected by the league's media.
In addition to Stone, three other Mountain West cornerbacks made the list – Colorado State's Jack Howell, Utah State's Ike Larsen, and Air Force's Trey Taylor.
A screening committee consisting of OSHOF members monitors all defensive backs throughout the season, including watch list players, and narrows the field to up to 15 semifinalists on Oct. 31. The three finalists will be announced on Nov. 28 and are submitted to a national panel of over 250 sports writers, sportscasters, former players and coaches who vote to determine the winner of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award. The winner will be announced in December on ESPN's live presentation of The Home Depot College Football Awards.
The official presentation of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award takes place in Oklahoma City, Feb. 6, 2024. The current winner and all former winners are invited each year to celebrate. Over 600 supporters attend the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Banquet each year, including many celebrities and dignitaries.
