Heavy rainfall floods portions of central West Virginia

An active weather day that saw the possibility for tornadoes, hail and thunderstorms brought several inches of rain to the region, prompting the National Weather Service to extend flood warnings in West Virginia.

Several inches of rain brought high water conditions to portions of central West Virginia and more precipitation is expected overnight.

Dispatchers fielded calls and monitored the storms, working into the night. Eyewitness News spoke with emergency management personnel in Kanawha County as they prepared storm response efforts.

Eyewitness News had crews stationed in Kanawha County where multiple water rescues were performed.

Viewer videos showed high water conditions throughout the Kanawha Valley.

Emergency personnel recommend avoiding travel along water-covered roads, especially at night when hazards become difficult to see.

UPDATED - 10:20 p.m., 4/11/24

Strong storms pushed through the Tri-State Thursday, bringing heavy rainfall and prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning to much of central West Virginia.

Upwards of 6-to-8 inches of rain fell in the span of about six hours, leading to high water conditions.

Multiple water rescues have been reported along Ruffner Avenue in Charleston, Green Valley Drive in Jefferson and in the Loudendale area.

High water continues to affect portions of Greenbrier Street in Charleston and Roxalana Road in Dunbar.

Rounds of rain are expected through the evening and into Friday.

Eyewitness News has multiple crews in the field collecting information on areas impacted by high water.

A strong path of storms rolled through the Tri-State Thursday evening and the National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings to portions of the Eyewitness News viewing area.

The Sissonville Fire Department reported making multiple water rescues and urges residents to stay off the roads.

Smith Creek has crested its banks in Charleston, covering neighboring roadways.

In neighboring Boone County, flooding has been reported along Toney's Branch Road in the Handley area.

Thunderstorms have brought heavy rainfall to portions of Kanawha County, resulting high water conditions.

A flash flood warning is in effect for the Kanawha County area until 11:30 p.m. and travel is discouraged by emergency personnel.

Emergency management personnel in Charleston are asking residents in the 2300 block of Woodward Drive near West Washington Street to move to the second stories of their homes due to high water conditions.

Videos from Eyewitness News viewers show water cresting roadways throughout the Kanawha Valley.

City officials in South Charleston report Rock Lake Drive has closed due to flooding.

Heavy thunderstorms brought up to 2 inches of rain for portions of West Virginia Thursday evening.

High water conditions have been reported along several roadways by emergency dispatchers in Kanawha and Jackson County:

  • Interstate 77 North is down to one lane near the Greenbrier Street exit due to runoff.
  • High water and debris has been reported along Greenbrier Street and Hillcrest Drive East in Charleston
  • Water has reached Route 21 near Kenna, West Virginia
