Why 1024?

Tl;dr: we’re math nerds 

 reading nerds.

As a young child, after a nice long read of a Nancy Drew mystery, I’d sit in the bath tub running through the powers of two. I’d recite, almost religiously, “One plus one is two, two plus two is four, four plus four is eight, eight plus eight is sixteen…” and so on until I couldn’t do the math anymore (usually getting stuck somewhere around eight-thousand, one-hundred, ninety-two). Powers of two have always been near and dear to my heart and the beauty and history of both words and numbers have fascinated me to this day.

1024 is two to the tenth power (2^10). Powers of two and binary numbers are incredibly important in the world of computing as they provide the foundation for any computing system (like the Sol Reader!). 1s and 0s, high current and low current, on and off. In binary, 1024 is written 10000000000, which, when read that way, is ten billion. We all know that there’s a dearth of reading in the world—you know, real reading. So while we only can serve the first 1024 readers today, that binary number represents our aspiration to help everyone in the world read more comfortably, more distraction-free, and just flat-out MORE.
