Women's Soccer Earns Bid to NCAA Atlantic Regional

Indianapolis, IN-- With his team crowded around him at a watch party held in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, Mercyhurst Women's Soccer Head Coach Jon Arlet learned that he'd be leading his team to his first NCAA Tournament and the school's first since 2008.

The Lakers were named the 7th seed in the Atlantic Region. They will open their tournament play against Concord who is the second seed in the region.

The Lakers finished the regular season as PSAC West Division Champions with a 12-3-1 record and won their PSAC Tournament Quarterfinal matchup against Edinboro 2-0. They lost to the tournament's eventual winner, Bloomsburg, 2-0 in the semifinal round.

The Lakers won their only PSAC Tournament Championship in 2008, earning a bid to the NCAA Tournament. They continued their run, knocking off Slippery Rock and West Chester, before losing in the NCAA Quarterfinal Round 3-2 to Saint Rose.

The Lakers impressed with their play this season, receiving three of the PSAC West's four end-of-season awards with five players named to All-Conference teams.

Emily Mijares, who tied for the conference lead with 13 regular-season goals, was named the division's Athlete of the Year as well as its Rookie of the Year. Maddie Elbro took home Defensive Athlete of the Year after posting a PSAC West-leading 10 sheets during the regular season.

Taryn Baxter and Amber Thomas joined Mijares and Elbro on the All-Conference First Team, and Madison Hoover was named to the All-Conference Second Team.

Mercyhurst was forced to wait with bated breath for the selection show after finding themselves on the bubble in the latest Division II Atlantic Regional Ranking published Nov. 8, sitting at No. 8, and unsure whether their win over Edinboro would be enough to punch their ticket.
