After announcing that the province will be expanding its rapid testing efforts to include teachers in the new year, Brian Pallister gave his most vigorous and emotional defence of his government’s efforts to contain COVID-19 yet.

The premier announced rapid testing for educators will start in Winnipeg in the new year and expand elsewhere.

Supporting this initiative is the addition of 20 Abbott ID NOW rapid testing units across the province, including two to Dauphin, one in Neepawa, one in Killarney and one in Russell.

Premier Brian Pallister announced an expansion of the province's rapid testing program on Thursday and gave a passionate defence of current health restrictions.

Also in the works is a $40 million order for Songbird Hyris rapid tests, which will provide capacity for 45,000 tests a month.

Further details on this program will be coming soon, Pallister said.

After fielding questions from journalists, Pallister called back to his media conference on Tuesday when he was asked about having the lowest approval rating among all premiers in a recent Angus Reid Institute survey.

Voice wavering, Pallister said that health measures currently in place are tough, but they’re the right thing to keep Manitobans safe.

“I’m the guy who’s stealing Christmas to keep you safe,” he said. “Because you need to do this now. You need to do the right thing. Because next year, we’ll have lots to celebrate and we’ll celebrate this year if we do the right thing this year. You don’t need to like me. I hope in years to come you might respect me for having the guts to tell you the right thing.

“And here’s the right thing: Stay safe. Protect each other. Love each other. Care for each other. You’ve got so many ways to show that, but don’t get together this Christmas.”
